Job description

Recreation Supervisor

This position reports to the Social Development Director and is a salaried, exempt role.

At Job Corps, recreation is more than downtime. It is an important part of student development. The right recreation program gives young adults opportunities to build confidence, develop teamwork, learn personal responsibility, manage stress, and discover interests that can stay with them long after they leave Job Corps.

We are looking for a Recreation Supervisor who understands that difference.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who can lead a team, build engaging programs, connect with young adults, and create an environment where students want to participate. You will have the opportunity to bring new ideas to the program while maintaining the structure, safety, and accountability our students need.

Make more than a living. Make a difference.

Position Overview

The Recreation Supervisor provides leadership and overall direction for the Center's recreation and non-vocational programs. You will supervise recreation staff, develop and coordinate activities, manage resources, maintain program standards, and ensure students have access to safe, structured, and meaningful opportunities outside the classroom.

Success in this position requires more than planning activities. We need someone who can lead people, solve problems, communicate expectations, and build a recreation program that students respect and want to be part of.

You will also have the opportunity to develop relationships with community organizations and identify activities, partnerships, volunteer opportunities, and experiences that expose students to life beyond the Center.

What You Bring

You are a leader who can balance structure with creativity.

You know how to organize people and programs, but you also understand that successful recreation depends on relationships. You can connect with young adults while maintaining appropriate boundaries and expectations.

You are comfortable making decisions, holding staff accountable, managing multiple activities, and adjusting when plans change. You understand that safety comes first, but you also know how to create an environment that is energetic, positive, and engaging.

Most importantly, you understand that the example you set matters.

What You Gain

This is an opportunity to lead a program that directly affects the daily lives of young adults preparing for their future.

You will have the ability to shape recreation programming, develop your staff, build community partnerships, and introduce students to activities and experiences they may never have had before.

For the right person, this position offers meaningful leadership experience and the opportunity to see the direct impact of your work.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, train, and develop recreation staff while establishing clear expectations for performance and accountability
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and oversee recreation, leisure-learning, athletic, and student engagement activities
  • Develop monthly and weekly recreation schedules that provide students with a variety of structured and engaging activities
  • Seek student input and use participation trends and student interests to strengthen recreation programming
  • Maintain a visible presence during recreation activities and ensure programs are properly supervised
  • Ensure recreation activities are conducted safely and in accordance with applicable Department of Labor (DOL), Job Corps Policy and Requirements Handbook (PRH), Center, and organizational requirements
  • Identify and address safety concerns associated with recreation facilities, activities, equipment, and events
  • Oversee water safety programming and ensure required safety measures, qualifications, documentation, and controls are maintained
  • Maintain accountability for recreation equipment, supplies, facilities, and other assigned resources
  • Maintain accurate participation records and submit required reports within established timeframes
  • Develop relationships with community organizations, recreation facilities, businesses, and other partners to expand opportunities available to students
  • Coordinate community service opportunities and projects that encourage students to become involved in the community
  • Coordinate off-Center recreation activities, including appropriate planning, student accountability, staffing, transportation, and supervision
  • Supervise and coordinate volunteers supporting recreation activities and programs
  • Assess staffing needs and work with Human Resources in recruiting, interviewing, and selecting qualified recreation staff
  • Conduct employee evaluations, coach and develop staff, address performance concerns, and make recommendations regarding promotions, transfers, and other personnel actions
  • Work collaboratively with Residential Living, Safety and Security, Transportation, Counseling, Wellness, Center Standards, and other departments to support student needs and Center operations
  • Respond appropriately to student behavioral concerns and support the Center's behavioral management and disciplinary processes when necessary
  • Maintain accountability of students, staff, equipment, and property during assigned activities
  • Promote an environment free from harassment, intimidation, bullying, discrimination, and disrespect
  • Attend required meetings, professional development activities, and training
  • Provide or support transportation for students participating in recreation activities when properly licensed, authorized, and assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate degree preferred
  • Three years of experience supervising recreation, athletics, youth development, non-vocational programming, or a related program preferred
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience preferred
  • Experience working with youth or young adults, particularly at-risk or underserved populations, preferred
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record preferred
  • Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), preferably with a passenger endorsement, preferred

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of a broad range of recreation, athletic, leisure, and student engagement activities
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to coach, develop, and hold staff accountable
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with young adults while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
  • Strong organizational, scheduling, and program-planning skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, staff, families, community partners, and leadership
  • Ability to manage multiple activities and priorities in a fast-moving residential environment
  • Ability to resolve problems, make sound decisions, and remain composed during challenging situations
  • Ability to motivate students and encourage participation from students with different personalities, interests, abilities, and backgrounds
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and contribute to the overall operation of the Center

Who We Hope to Find

We are looking for someone who wants to build something, not simply maintain a schedule.

The strongest candidate will bring ideas, energy, consistency, and leadership to the recreation program. You may come from recreation, athletics, coaching, youth programs, military recreation, community programs, education, or another environment where you have led people and organized meaningful activities.

If you know how to lead a team, connect with young adults, create structure, and turn good ideas into programs people actually want to participate in, we want to hear from you.

Veteran Friendly Employer

We proudly stand as a Veteran friendly employer and recognize the value of military service, leadership, and real-world experience.

We welcome Veterans, their spouses, and military spouses. The leadership, accountability, adaptability, and ability to work with people from different backgrounds developed through military service can translate directly to the Job Corps mission.

For Veterans looking for another opportunity to lead and serve, this position offers the chance to use those experiences to help young adults build their own futures.

Your experience matters here.
