Job description

Police Records Technician

Elk Grove Village, Illinois, a strategically located, progressive community that is home to the largest consolidated business park in North America, is seeking a dynamic, detailed and skills-oriented candidate for the position of Police Records Technician in the Police Department. Elk Grove Village is located in Cook and DuPage Counties adjacent to O'Hare International Airport and is home to approximately 3,600 businesses, located in its 5.4 square mile Business Park.

The Police Records Technician ensures that prompt and accurate office assistance is provided to the department by performing a wide variety of tasks. This position is the first contact for phone calls and walk-in visitors and must exercise discretion and independent judgment in responding to inquiries from the public and be able to determine the severity of a call for service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of maintenance and filing of office and public records functions including but not limited to: completes Freedom of Information requests, responsible for adjudication paperwork-process, handles court communication, performs concealed carry background checks, processes accident reports, ensures accuracy and promptness of arrest warrant processing, expungements, parking and compliance tickets, and maintains the Law Enforcement Agency Data System (LEADS) program user database.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding and knowledge of new and changing laws pertaining to law enforcement procedures including the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and how to process reports along with knowledge of the Body Worn Camera Act and redactions.
  • Ensures accuracy and confidentiality regarding Freedom of Information request by ensuring appropriate information is redacted or if a complete denial is necessary.
  • Operates a personal computer by typing, modifying, and retrieving a wide variety of police reports and records, memoranda, letters, and other material.
  • Enters and modifies records in the computerized records management system operating the Law Enforcement Agency Data System (LEADS) by entering and retrieving data.
  • Reviews and retrieves arrest and court records from State and Cook County Circuit Court computerized records systems.
  • Utilizes various software packages to create and modify a variety of projects. Composes and types correspondence, proofreads for accuracy and approves written reports.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of 30 credit hours of college coursework, with an Associate's Degree preferred, as well as a minimum of two years of comprehensive and progressive work responsibilities, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training. The position may receive training in FOIA laws through seminars and online training offered by the Attorney General's Office. Additional training will be provided as needed. The position is required to keep up to date with ever-changing Federal, State and local laws.

License and Certification Requirements: The position is required to become LEADS certified within 30 days of hire.

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

Salary Range: $56,961.06 - $80,884.64

This is a non-exempt, full-time, in office position working Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. โ€“ 5:00 p.m. Additional hours may be required as necessary to fulfill the responsibility of the role.
