Work EnvironmentRecording studios, music production settingsLive events, theaters, broadcast stations
Industry UsageMusic, film, and media productionEvent production, broadcasting, live sound

While both roles involve working with audio equipment, a Recording Studio Engineer primarily focuses on recording, mixing, and producing music or audio in studio settings. A Sound Technician often works in live environments, managing sound for events or broadcasts. The roles overlap in technical skills and equipment knowledge but differ mainly in setting and specific responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a recording studio engineer?

To thrive as a Recording Studio Engineer, you need a solid understanding of audio engineering principles, acoustics, and music production, often supported by a degree or certification in audio engineering or a related field. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and hardware such as mixing consoles and microphones is essential. Strong attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and effective communication with artists and producers are crucial soft skills. These competencies are vital for producing high-quality recordings, ensuring smooth sessions, and meeting the artistic vision of clients.

Are recording studio engineers in demand?

Recording studio engineers are in steady demand in the music, film, and broadcasting industries, especially those with strong technical skills and proficiency with digital audio workstations and recording equipment. Employment opportunities can vary based on industry trends, location, and experience level, but overall, the role remains essential for audio production projects.

What does a recording studio engineer do?

A Recording Studio Engineer is responsible for capturing, mixing, and editing audio during music, film, or voiceover recording sessions. They operate recording equipment, set up microphones, adjust sound levels, and work closely with artists and producers to achieve the desired sound. Their technical expertise ensures high-quality audio output and an efficient, creative studio environment. Additionally, they may assist in post-production tasks such as editing and mastering tracks.

How much money do recording studio engineers make?

Recording studio engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $50,000 to $70,000, with experienced professionals or those working in major markets earning higher. Salaries can vary based on experience, location, and the complexity of projects handled, and many engineers supplement income through freelance work or additional skills like mixing and mastering.

What are some common challenges faced by recording studio engineers during live recording sessions?

Recording Studio Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing unexpected technical issues, balancing sound levels for multiple instruments or vocalists, and ensuring clear communication between artists and production teams. Live sessions can be unpredictable, requiring quick troubleshooting skills and adaptability to maintain audio quality. Effective engineers also anticipate potential problems and prepare backup plans to minimize disruptions and keep the session running smoothly.

Why join us? Weโ€™re on a mission to shape the future of voice, and weโ€™re building a team thatโ€™s curious, collaborative, and passionate about making great ideas heard.

About the Role
As a Solutions Engineer at Voices, you will serve as the essential technical bridge between our clients and our internal teams. This role is unique because it sits at the intersection of high-growth AI technology and professional audio production. You will act as our "Technical Librarian" for resale data and the go-to expert for our Recording Studio, ensuring that complex AI and audio requirements are translated into seamless, actionable project scopes.

Responsibilities
In this role, youโ€™ll take ownership of the following key areas:
  • Technical Sales Consultation: Join sales calls as the subject matter expert and lead technical demos for the Voices Recording Studio to build client trust and drive conversions.
  • Project Scoping & Intake: Define and confirm technical requirementsโ€”including formatting, metadata, and JSON structuresโ€”during the RFP and project intake phases.
  • Resale Data Management: Curate and organize our resale data library, acting as the "Source of Truth" to provide accurate samples and data-driven proposals for the sales team.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Review internal contracts to ensure technical feasibility and work closely with Legal and Finance teams to minimize operational risk.
  • Technical Accuracy: Distinguish between flexible "alternative" suggestions and "strict" technical requirements to ensure project deliverables align perfectly with client infrastructure.

What You Bring
Weโ€™re looking for someone who brings some or all of the following:
  • Educational Background: A Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Audio Engineering, Data Science, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Industry Literacy: A strong foundational knowledge of the AI industry, specifically how audio and speech datasets impact machine learning outcomes.
  • Audio Expertise: Deep understanding of signal chains, recording logistics, and audio specifications.
  • Data Proficiency: Mastery of studio workflows, including script formatting, metadata architecture, and file output types (JSON, WAV, etc.).
  • Communication Skills: The ability to translate complex "tech-speak" for non-technical stakeholders and review contractual language for technical accuracy.
  • Core Competencies: High proficiency in customer focus, negotiation, resilience, and communication.

Perks & Benefits
In addition to competitive compensation, we offer a range of perks that support your growth, wellbeing, and day-to-day flexibility. Hereโ€™s what you can look forward to:
  • Generous Vacation: We offer 15 days of annual vacation (pro-rated for your first year), plus additional paid leave during our scheduled summer and winter holiday closures.
  • Personal Time: Take care of what matters with 5 paid personal days and 3 unpaid personal days annually
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage: Access to health and dental benefits after just 3 months of employment
  • Hybrid Flexibility: Enjoy the best of both worlds with our hybrid work environment
  • Performance Bonus Program: Recognizing your impact with bonus opportunities tied to company and individual performance
  • Learning & Development Support: We invest in your growth with a dedicated L&D budget and coverage for platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, Codecademy, and more
  • Community Impact: We empower you to give back with 8 hours of paid volunteer time annually, allowing you to support the causes and nonprofits that matter most to you.
  • A Great Team: Work with genuinely kind, smart, and talented people who love what they do (and know how to have fun doing it).

Remote Work Details: While you are always welcome at our Ontario hub, your attendance is optional. If we ever require your presence for a specific event, weโ€™ve got you covered: travel and accommodations will be fully funded.

Compensation
OTE Range:  $120,000-$190,000
A typical hire for this role generally falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range based on skills, experience, qualifications and internal equity. Employees grow through the range based on performance and demonstrated competencies.
