Geotechnical Materials Technologist

ProtechGeo & Material Testing Ltd. is a geotechnical consulting company based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Our team has decades of combined experience and expertise serving clients in Alberta and Western Canada.

We are seeking a motivated field-based Geotechnical Materials Technologist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting materials testing, analysis, and quality control procedures related to construction materials, including concrete, asphalt, soils, and aggregates. This role involves both field and laboratory work, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project specifications. We welcome applicants with junior, intermediate, or senior-level experience, with duties matched to experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Field Testing & Inspection:

  • Conduct field sampling and testing of construction materials (concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and soils) following industry standards (CSA, ASTM, AASHTO).
  • Perform quality control inspections and document results on construction sites.
  • Assist in troubleshooting material performance issues and reporting non-compliance.
  • Operate and maintain testing equipment in accordance with calibration and safety protocols.

Laboratory Testing & Analysis:

  • Perform laboratory tests on materials, such as compressive strength testing of concrete, gradation analysis, and proctor compaction tests.
  • Prepare and cure test specimens as per project requirements.
  • Analyze test results and ensure accurate data recording.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory accreditation and quality control programs.


Technical Reporting & Documentation:

  • Prepare detailed and accurate test reports.
  • Maintain proper records of test data and observations.
  • Communicate test results to engineers, contractors, and project managers.


Health, Safety & Compliance:

  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Follow laboratory and field safety protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with company, client, and regulatory requirements.


Qualifications & Skills:

  • Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
  • Open to applicants with junior, intermediate, or senior-level experience.
  • Experience with CSA, ASTM, and AASHTO testing procedures.
  • CCIL/ACI certification(s) are an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift heavy samples and work in various weather conditions.
