Inspector - State Egg Board (Eastern Indiana)
City: Richmond
Job Description:
Job Summary
Under the guidance of the supervisor, the Eastern Area Inspector is responsible for conducting several regulatory inspection activities within 22-counties in eastern Indiana. As the inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations governing the production, distribution, labeling, and sale of shell eggs while maintaining professional relationships with industry stakeholders and regulatory partners.
The assigned territory includes the following counties: Bartholomew, Blackford, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Grant, Hancock, Henry, Jay, Jefferson, Jennings, Madison, Ohio, Randolph, Ripley, Rush, Shelby, Switzerland, Union, and Wayne.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • State Egg inspections consist of verifying packaging is properly labeled, eggs meet quality standards, and that the product is being maintained in an environment that promotes a safe product to the consumer
  • FDA Egg Safety Rule Inspections - Federal inspections consist of reviewing egg production facilities SE Prevention Plans, reviewing supporting records to assure compliance with the FDA Egg Rule, preparing and/or reviewing comprehensive reports for submission to FDA
  • USDA COOL Audits - Performing Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) Inspections at retail locations throughout Indiana for UDSA. Activities include preparing a final report of findings, communicating findings with retail management, and transmitting the information to the appropriate regulatory agency
  • USDA/AMS Shell Egg Surveillance Inspections - Conducting shell egg surveillance inspection of USDA registered egg production facilities and hatchery operations as designated by the USDA/AMS under the Egg Products Inspection Act. Evaluating shell eggs to verify quality and confirm appropriate environmental controls
  • Performing additional duties and special projects as assigned

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 6 months of food retail industry or food production/processing
  • In lieu of degree, an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered (Associate's degree + 2.5 years of experience; HS/GED + 4.5 years of experience)
  • Ability to pass an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) background screening and obtain/maintain FDA credentials and commission
  • Have or be able to obtain certifications or accreditation within the first year of employment
    • Obtain accreditation from FDA to complete inspections under 21CFR 118 Egg Safey Rule
    • Obtain Shell Egg Grader and Surveillance certification through the USDA/AMS Poultry Program, under the Egg Quality Inspection Act
    • Obtain certification to conduct COOL audits per USDA/AMS (Agricultural Marketing Service) COOL program
  • Basic computer operation, organizational, time management, and communication/conflict resolution skills are essential
  • Ability to establish own work schedule and be self-motivated to complete a level of work expected of the position
  • Ability to conduct an inspection in a professional manner and record and submit findings to the appropriate agency
  • Ability to understand and interpret laws and regulations pertaining to the inspection being conducted
  • Ability to deal with potential conflict
  • Ability to pass an annual respiratory physical and fitness test
  • A good understanding of the retail food industry, including the production and distribution of shell eggs
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian drivers license
  • Travel
