Information Desk Assistant

The Legislative Counsel Bureau (LCB) is seeking a diverse pool of qualified applicants for the position of Information Desk Assistant within the Research Division. The LCB is a nonpartisan, legislative service agency that provides professional, technical and administrative support to the Nevada Legislature, which convenes biennially in odd-numbered years for 120-day sessions and for rare special sessions during the interim periods. The Research Division provides high quality policy analysis, research support and other assistance to the Nevada Legislature, individual Legislators, legislative committees and constituents. The Research Library collects, organizes, and preserves materials related to the Nevada legislative process and other legislative issues for research purposes. This is a full-time, temporary position located in Carson City, Nevada. This is a session-only position with a maximum duration of eighteen months.

Position Description: Under the general supervision of the Legislative Librarian, the Information Desk Assistant serves as the first point of contact for the Research Library to legislators, legislative staff, state and local government agencies and the public. Responsibilities of the Information Desk Assistant may include, without limitation:

  • Conducting front desk operations for the Research Library, including answering phones and greeting visitors;
  • Performing document management tasks such as photocopying, scanning, filing, stamping and labeling;
  • Responding to general inquiries from legislators, staff and the public;
  • Supporting librarians in completing research activities and preparing final work products;
  • Verifying and updating information in print and electronic files to ensure accuracy and completeness;
  • Maintaining library order and ensuring the facility remains organized and in proper condition; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: The Information Desk Assistant will be selected with special preference given to the candidate's training, experience and aptitude in the fields of customer service and clerical support. A qualified candidate must have: (1) a high school diploma/GED and at least 2 years of receptionist, clerical or customer service experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 3 years of experience in the field of administrative or clerical support in a professional setting is preferred.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong organizational, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities;
  • Familiarity with online research tools and general database usage;
  • Proficiency in document preparation including grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting and style review;
  • Experience using Microsoft Office software and Adobe Acrobat Pro;
  • The ability to plan and prioritize tasks;
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in telephone-based interactions;
  • The ability to work independently and adapt to changes in the work environment;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy;
  • A thorough understanding of the importance of confidentiality in handling documents and communications;
  • The ability to exercise sound judgment and to remain impartial when working with legislators, staff and the public;
  • A high level of professionalism;
  • The capacity to cultivate and sustain effective working relationships; and
  • Punctuality, dependability, self-motivation and excellent customer service.

Salary: The annual salary for this position is based upon a Grade 31, which has a salary range of $54,434 to $80,054 under the employee/employer paid retirement option. An employer-paid contribution plan is also available with a reduced salary in lieu of an employee contribution. Actual starting salary will be based on experience.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in a typical library environment. Overtime is required during legislative sessions and certain other periods as necessary to meet the demands of the Legislature. When overtime is worked, the Information Desk Assistant may earn compensatory time that may be taken at a later date or be paid for overtime, consistent with the LCB Rules and Policies and subject to budgetary limits.
