Recent Graduate Engineer information

What is a recent graduate engineer?

Recent graduate engineers are individuals who have recently completed an engineering degree and are beginning their professional careers. They typically have foundational knowledge in their specific engineering discipline, such as civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering. These engineers often start in entry-level positions where they gain practical experience, develop technical skills, and learn workplace protocols. Many employers offer training and mentorship programs to help recent graduates transition smoothly into the workforce.

What are some common challenges recent graduate engineers face during their first year on the job?

Recent graduate engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to real-world project timelines, transitioning from academic theory to practical application, and understanding workplace communication protocols. Navigating team dynamics and learning to balance multiple tasks or projects simultaneously can also be new experiences. Seeking mentorship and actively asking questions can help ease the transition and accelerate professional growth in the early stages of an engineering career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a recent graduate engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Recent Graduate Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and at least a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks, as well as experience with project management tools, is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability will help you excel in collaborative, fast-paced environments. These skills are crucial for effectively contributing to projects, learning quickly on the job, and successfully transitioning from academia to professional engineering practice.

What is the difference between Recent Graduate Engineer vs Entry-Level Engineer?

AspectRecent Graduate EngineerEntry-Level Engineer
QualificationsRecent degree, limited work experienceSame as recent graduate, possibly some internships
Work EnvironmentTraining-focused, supervised rolesOperational roles with increasing responsibilities
Industry UsageCommonly used for new graduates entering engineering rolesBroader term for early-career engineers

Recent Graduate Engineer typically refers to individuals who have recently completed their engineering degree and are starting their professional careers, often in training or supervised roles. Entry-Level Engineer is a broader term that includes recent graduates and those with minimal work experience beginning their engineering jobs. Both roles are aimed at early-career professionals, but 'Recent Graduate Engineer' emphasizes the candidate's recent academic completion, while 'Entry-Level Engineer' highlights the job level regardless of graduation timing.

Are recent graduate engineers struggling to find jobs?

Recent graduate engineers often face competitive job markets, especially in fields requiring specialized skills or certifications. Employment prospects can vary based on industry demand, geographic location, and the current economic climate, but gaining practical experience through internships and developing technical skills can improve job prospects.

How to get a job as a recent graduate engineer?

To secure a job as a recent graduate engineer, candidates should build a strong resume highlighting relevant coursework, internships, and technical skills such as CAD or programming. Networking through career fairs, professional organizations, and online platforms like LinkedIn can also improve job prospects. Additionally, obtaining relevant certifications or licenses may enhance employability in certain engineering fields.

What jobs do recent graduate engineers go into?

Recent graduate engineers typically pursue entry-level roles such as design engineer, project engineer, manufacturing engineer, or quality engineer. These positions often require knowledge of engineering principles, technical skills, and sometimes certifications like EIT or FE, and may involve working in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or technology.

Job description

Junior CNC/EDM Tooling Technician

Direct Hire | Starting at $22+/hour | Spring Lake, MI

A day in your new role

Picture this: you clock in at 7:00 AM, review the day’s priorities with a seasoned toolmaker, and move to a CNC mill where you’ll load a program, verify a setup, and check offsets. Before lunch, you’ll shadow an EDM operation, learn how electrodes and toolpaths come together, and take measurements with calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify tolerances down to .0005". In the afternoon, you might tweak a G-code line under guidance, update a fixture, and help with routine maintenance. You wrap by documenting results and straightening your work area as part of 5S and continuous improvement.

Role snapshot
  • Employment type: Direct Hire through Kelly Services
  • Location: Spring Lake, MI
  • Schedule: 1st Shift, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM
  • Overtime: About 5–8 hours during the week; weekends are rare
  • Compensation: Starting at $22+/hour, flexible based on education, training, and experience
What you’ll learn and contribute
  • Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, and EDM machines with mentorship
  • Develop CNC programs using G-code and/or CAM software
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications
  • Work confidently with tight tolerances (as close as .0005")
  • Select, build, and adjust fixtures and tooling
  • Download/upload CNC programs and make guided edits
  • Monitor machining processes and inspect finished parts for accuracy
  • Apply precision measurement using calipers, micrometers, and gauges
  • Troubleshoot machine alarms and machining issues
  • Perform basic preventive and routine maintenance
  • Grow into operating multiple machines
  • Support continuous improvement efforts, including Kaizen and 5S
  • Build hands-on experience with tooling, dies, molds, and precision machining
Who will thrive here

This role is ideal if you’re early in your machining career and eager to turn classroom training into real production results.

  • Recent graduate of a CNC, machining, manufacturing, or tool & die program
  • Currently enrolled and nearing completion of a CNC or machining program
  • Completing or recently completed a machining apprenticeship
  • Recent college graduate with machining/manufacturing coursework
  • Motivated to build a long-term path in CNC programming, EDM machining, tooling, mold making, or tool & die
Preferred technical foundation
  • CNC machine setup and operation
  • Tooling selection and adjustments
  • Tool & die concepts
  • G-code programming
  • CAM software exposure
  • Blueprint reading and shop math
  • Precision measurement with calipers, micrometers, and gauges
  • Understanding machining tolerances
  • Hands-on time with mills and lathes

Familiarity with Mastercam, BobCAD, OneCNC, AutoCAD, or Fanuc controls is a plus, not a requirement.

Education & training
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Recent or upcoming completion of a CNC, machining, tool & die, manufacturing technology, or similar technical program strongly preferred
  • College, vocational school, trade school, apprenticeship, or hands-on technical training all accepted
  • No prior full-time machining experience required
  • Education or exposure in tool & die, mold making, or tooling is highly desirable
Why join through Kelly Services
  • True entry-level manufacturing opportunity
  • Apply your CNC or machining education in a production environment
  • Learn CNC programming and EDM from an experienced tooling team
  • Hands-on with molds, dies, fixtures, and precision tooling
  • Work with advanced CNC and EDM equipment
  • Stable 1st-shift schedule with weekday overtime
  • Direct-hire role with long-term growth potential
  • Build capabilities that open doors in CNC programming, EDM, machining, and tool & die
Ready to get started?

If you’ve finished—or are close to finishing—a CNC, machining, tool & die, or manufacturing program, we want to meet you. Apply today to launch your CNC programming, EDM machining, and precision tooling career with Kelly Services in Spring Lake, MI.
