Job Summary

The Chair of the Department of Computer Science at Angelo State University provides academic, administrative, and strategic leadership for a dynamic department committed to excellence in teaching, student success, curriculum innovation, and faculty collaboration. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, the Chair is responsible for fostering a student-centered culture that promotes retention, graduation, and career readiness while ensuring a high-quality, cohesive curriculum across undergraduate and graduate programs. The Chair will lead efforts to strengthen academic programs through continuous assessment and improvement, support faculty development and scholarly activity, promote a collaborative and inclusive departmental culture, and build partnerships that enhance student learning and workforce preparation. The successful candidate will provide visionary yet practical leadership that balances innovation with operational excellence and advances the mission of the department, the college, and Angelo State University.

Essential Duties Student Success

Provide leadership to improve student success through effective advising, student engagement, retention initiatives, timely graduation, and career preparation. Foster a student-centered culture that promotes academic achievement and prepares graduates for successful careers and advanced study.

Curriculum Leadership

Lead the continuous review, assessment, and improvement of undergraduate and graduate curricula to ensure academic quality, appropriate course sequencing, industry relevance, and alignment with student learning outcomes. Promote collaboration among faculty to maintain a cohesive and high-quality educational experience across all programs.

Faculty Leadership and Department Culture

Recruit, mentor, evaluate, and support faculty while fostering a collaborative, collegial, and accountable departmental culture. Encourage excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, and shared governance, while promoting open communication and teamwork across the department.

Research and External Partnerships

Support faculty and student scholarship, external funding opportunities, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Develop partnerships with industry, government, alumni, and community organizations that enhance student learning, workforce development, and the department’s regional impact.

Operational Leadership

Provide effective administrative leadership by overseeing course scheduling, workload assignments, budgeting, personnel, facilities, and other departmental operations. Ensure compliance with university policies while promoting efficient and transparent decision-making.

Assessment and Continuous Improvement

Promote a culture of continuous assessment and evidence-based decision making. Use program assessment, student success data, and faculty input to strengthen academic programs, improve operational effectiveness, and support continuous departmental improvement.

Strategic Leadership

Develop and implement a strategic vision that strengthens the department’s academic foundation while positioning it for sustainable growth. Work collaboratively with the dean, faculty, students, and external stakeholders to advance the mission of the department, the College of Science and Engineering, and Angelo State University.

  • Knowledge of academic leadership and operations within a computer science department, including curriculum development, student success initiatives, faculty evaluation, assessment, budgeting, and university policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching practices, student learning, curriculum design, and continuous program improvement, including the use of assessment data to support evidence-based decision making.
  • Knowledge of faculty development, shared governance, accreditation, strategic planning, and best practices for leading a collaborative academic department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution, with academic credentials sufficient to teach and provide leadership across undergraduate and graduate computer science programs.
  • Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Angelo State University.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, scholarly achievement, and service appropriate for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Demonstrated academic leadership experience, such as department chair, associate chair, program director, assistant dean, dean, or other significant academic leadership experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience leading curriculum development, program assessment, faculty development, student success initiatives, or other continuous improvement efforts in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience serving as a department chair or in a comparable academic leadership role.
  • Experience leading accreditation, assessment, or continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success improving student success, retention, graduation, or career readiness.
  • Experience recruiting, mentoring, evaluating, and developing faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a collaborative and collegial departmental culture.
  • Experience developing partnerships with industry, government, alumni, or community organizations.
  • Demonstrated success obtaining external funding, grants, or industry support for academic programs or research.
