Job description

Description:

We are seeking an experienced and detail oriented Controller to lead the accounting and financial reporting functions for a growing multifamily real estate and property management organization.


The Controller will be responsible for the overall accuracy, integrity, and effectiveness of the company's accounting and financial reporting functions and will serve as a key financial partner to senior leadership.


Direct accounting experience in multifamily real estate, apartment communities, or residential property management is required.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting functions and financial reporting for a portfolio of multifamily apartment properties and related entities.
  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including review of financial statements, journal entries, bank reconciliations, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, general ledger functions, and multi-entity/intercompany accounting.
  • Ensure accurate property-level accounting for rent collections, tenant receivables, security deposits, concessions, bad debt, and other operating activity.
  • Partner with property management and operations teams to review financial performance, budget-to-actual variances, operating expenses, cash flow, and capital expenditures.
  • Prepare and review owner, investor, lender, and other required financial reporting.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable reporting requirements.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting team members while maintaining a high-performing and accountable department.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, automation, and overall efficiency.
  • Support senior leadership with financial analysis and assist with acquisitions, dispositions, property transitions, and onboarding of new properties.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar leadership role.
  • Direct multifamily real estate, apartment, or residential property management accounting experience is required.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and multifamily/property accounting.
  • Experience working with multiple properties and legal entities.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience with property management accounting systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop an accounting team.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • High level of accuracy, accountability, and professional judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Entrata preferred; experience with Yardi, RealPage, MRI, AppFolio, or similar multifamily property management software will also be considered.
  • Experience managing and developing an accounting team.
