How much do reagents jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for reagents in the United States is $24.95, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $28.85 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are reagents?

Reagents are substances or compounds that are added to a system in order to cause a chemical reaction or to see if a reaction occurs. They are essential in laboratories for testing, analysis, and synthesis of new compounds. Reagents can be used in various scientific fields such as chemistry, biology, and medicine, often helping to identify, measure, or produce other substances. Their purity and quality are critical for accurate experimental results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reagents specialist?

To thrive as a Reagents Specialist, you need a solid background in chemistry or biology, attention to detail, and typically a bachelor's degree in a life science field. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), quality control protocols, and reagent preparation equipment is essential. Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are key soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the accurate preparation, handling, and documentation of reagents, which are critical for reliable laboratory results and scientific research.

What are some common challenges faced by reagents specialists when managing inventory and quality control?

Reagents Specialists often encounter challenges such as maintaining accurate inventory records, ensuring proper storage conditions, and tracking expiration dates to prevent waste. Balancing timely ordering with budget constraints can add complexity, especially in fast-paced laboratory settings. Additionally, strict adherence to quality control protocols is essential to guarantee reagents perform as expected, requiring attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Regular collaboration with laboratory staff and suppliers helps address these challenges and maintain smooth operations.

What is the difference between Reagents vs Laboratory Technicians?

AspectReagentsLaboratory Technicians
CredentialsMay require chemistry or science degrees, certifications in lab safetyTypically hold an associate's or bachelor's degree in laboratory science or related field
Work EnvironmentManufacturing or chemical supply companies, research labsHospitals, research labs, diagnostic facilities
Job RolePrepare, supply, and manage chemical reagents used in experiments and testsPerform laboratory tests, prepare samples, and operate lab equipment

Reagents are specialized chemicals used in laboratory testing and research, often supplied by chemical companies. Laboratory technicians handle the practical aspects of testing, including preparing samples and operating equipment. While both roles are essential in lab settings, reagents focus on chemical supply, whereas laboratory technicians focus on conducting tests and analysis.

Job description

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

The Supply Chain Science & Technology Lead (Reagents) drives competitive advantage by embedding scientific rigor and technical innovation into our global reagent operations. This role ensures that complex biochemical products are "Designed for Distribution"-optimized for stability, global regulatory compliance, and seamless scalability. As the technical authority for reagent supply chain integration, you bridge the gap between R&D and global commercialization, ensuring that life-saving diagnostic chemistry remains robust through every link of the end-to-end (E2E) supply chain. Every day, you strive to lead by example, so that when your team members engage with you, they see a leader who consistently demonstrates our values of Integrity, Courage, and Passion.

What You Do:

  • Authentic & Courageous Leadership: Build trust through transparent communication and scientific integrity. Constructively challenge technical assumptions to foster open dialogue and transform complex reagent constraints into logistical opportunities.

  • Technical Talent Development: Lead and empower a team of experts to unlock potential in the fields of supply chain science, cold chain technology, and process engineering.

  • Systems Thinker: Analyze the complex interplay between chemical stability, environmental factors, and global logistics to craft integrated solutions for future readiness.

Business/Strategy:

  • Architect Cross-Functional Integration: Embed technical supply chain requirements early in the Product Life Cycle (PLC). Work with R&D to ensure reagent formulations and primary packaging are optimized for global movement and temperature stability.

  • Regulatory & Technical Safeguarding: Oversee the integration of complex reagent constraints, including Dangerous Goods (DG) classifications, Global Trade Compliance, and environmental restrictions (e.g., REACH/RoHS).

  • Cold Chain Expertise: Lead the design and validation of temperature-controlled logistics strategies to prevent post-launch delays and ensure product efficacy from manufacturing to the laboratory.

  • Optimization of Reagent Footprint: Define physical and environmental requirements (stability data, secondary packaging, humidity control) to maximize shipping density and minimize the global carbon footprint of temperature-controlled shipments.

  • Strategic Partnerships: Build collaborative relationships with R&D, Manufacturing, and Quality to ensure technical alignment and execution across the E2E supply chain.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation:

  • Technical Process Excellence: Identify and lead opportunities for technical process optimization and efficiency gains, particularly by applying Lean process design to reagent handling and storage.

  • Operational Innovation: Drive the adoption of new technologies-such as advanced sensors, sustainable packaging materials, or digital stability tracking-to balance cost efficiency with entrepreneurial thinking.

  • Process Validation & Scale-Up: Ensure manufacturing processes are technically ready for global scale, managing the transition of new reagent technologies from pilot scale to high-volume commercial production.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Pharmacy, or Chemical Engineering. An advanced degree (Master's, Ph.D., or MBA) is highly preferred due to the technical nature of the role.

  • 8+ years of leadership in a highly regulated industry (Diagnostics, Pharma, or Biotech), with a clear understanding of the technical interface between Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain.

  • Deep expertise in reagent life cycles, including product development, stability testing, and the management of hazardous materials (Dangerous Goods).

  • Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional leadership by consistently role modeling Roche Values, as well as actively demonstrating capabilities and behaviors specific to Roche Leadership Framework (Leadership Commitments, Creative Leadership, VACC) and Operating Principles.

  • Strong strategic and operational decision-making with a proven ability to lead and drive global projects in a complex, culturally diverse and dynamic environment through a strong solution-oriented approach along with a strong ability to coach others to do the same.
