Position: Grounds Person Classification: Short-term - Full-time

Department: Fairgrounds Reports to: Facilities Manager

Position Grade: Grade 8 Rate of Pay: $17.78/hour

Position Schedule: August 10, 2026 - September 13, 2026


Job Summary:

This position exists to perform grounds keeping and janitorial duties for the Ravalli County Fairgrounds leading up to and during our annual County Fair. This position is a short-term, temporary position. This position is responsible for but not limited to: helping to maintain irrigation schedule for grounds, weed eating, cleaning and other maintenance tasks. The employee will perform most tasks with some independence, however in some situations he/she may work as a member of a team.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

  • None


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Will maintain irrigation schedule for all green areas of the fairgrounds
  • May paint or refinish outdoor furniture.
  • Assist in placement of benches, picnic tables, and trash cans for events.
  • Is responsible for picking up litter and emptying trash cans.
  • May use chemicals to control insects, disease, and weeds as directed by supervisor.
  • Will assist with set up prior to events and tear down and janitorial duties after events on grounds and in buildings - including bathroom and floor maintenance.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide a quality area for public enjoyment.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be dependable and capable of exercising good judgment on time management issues.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills (receiving directives).
  • Learn cleaning, maintenance, gardening methods and use of materials and equipment.
  • Learn the operation of motorized equipment such as string trimmers, golf carts, backpack blowers and tractor.
  • Learn proper use of hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, picks, shovels, spades, rakes, loppers, saws or similar tools.
  • Learn irrigation techniques using agricultural sprinkler, hose and drip systems.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate orally with co-workers and the general public in a one-to-one setting.
  • Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction, observation and research.
  • Work cooperatively with Board Members, County employees and the general public.
  • Be safety conscious and work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Recognize that the fairgrounds are a public facility with multiple events happening at any one time and that the public is our client.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude suitable for the job and working with the public at all times.
  • At times the position will require the performance of other essential functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
  • At times the position will require working weekends such as the annual fair

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.


Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a background check


Work Environment:

  • Primarily outdoors or in various fairground buildings.
  • Work in different weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Travel over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.

Physical Requirements:

  • Move heavy objects (70 to100 pounds) short distances (50 feet or less).
  • Bend or stoop repeatedly over time.
