Job description

Position: Custodian II Classification: Non-Exempt, FT
Department: Facilities Reports to: Facilities Manager
Posting Date: 05/19/2026 Application Deadline: Until filled
Position Grade: Grade 8 Rate of Pay: $17.78/hour
Job Summary:
Work Week: 2nd shift hours
Under the direction of the Facilities manager or designee, this position performs physical labor in cleaning and ensuring an efficient clean and safe building. Light maintenance duties as required to assist in all aspects of maintaining Ravalli County buildings and properties.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None.

Travel Required:
Travel between Ravalli County buildings is required.
Duties/Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  • Perform day to day janitorial and maintenance activities for primary Ravalli County buildings and property.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies off hours to assist with:
    • Weather related operations
    • Emergency maintenance
  • Operate landscaping equipment
    • Mowers
    • Trimmers
    • Hand tools
  • Operate snow removal equipment
    • Snow plow
    • Snow blower
    • Shovels
  • Service, clean and supply restrooms.
  • Seasonal: Fairground restroom cleaning and supplies as needed.
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
  • Clean building floors using appropriate equipment (manual or power)
    • Sweeping
    • Mopping
    • Floor polishing
    • Vacuum
    • Carpet Shampooer/Steam Cleaners
  • Preparation and use of chemical cleaners to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Ability to read and understand guidance of SDS and manufactures specifications for proper use of chemicals.
  • Proper storage and labeling of chemicals as specified by manufacturer and SDS.
  • Gather and empty trash receptacles.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines and/or equipment.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions and mirrors using appropriate cleaning agent and tools.
  • Submit work order for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Assist maintenance personnel as directed in repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work area; ensure cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked and Lead is notified of supplies or equipment as needed to assure proper supplies are maintained.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing tasks such as:
    • Locking doors after operating hours as directed by Facilities Manager.
    • Unlocking doors for normal operating hours as directed by Facilities Manager.
    • Checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
    • Checking equipment as directed by Facilities Manager for normal operations.
    • Reporting safety hazards and deficiencies to Facility Manager.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
  • Knowledge of how to properly utilize and follow direction of SDS and product specifications.
  • Detail-oriented and thorough.
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
  • Ability to keep Ravalli County buildings clean and orderly.
  • Ability to interact with staff and general public while remaining professional, polite and courteous.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years' experience in similar position

Additional Eligibility Requirements:
  • Ability to work evening schedule and willing to work weekends and on call when emergencies arise.
  • Must possess a valid Montana Driver's license.
  • Must pass a background check.

Work Environment:
  • Indoor and outdoor settings potential to work outdoors in inclement weather for periods of time.
