ROLE & PURPOSE
The primary responsibilities of the Speech/Language Pathologist are to conduct assessments, develop and implement communication IEPs, collect data, and maintain eligibility records.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

  • Master's Degree in Communication Disorders, Speech-Language Pathology, or equivalent
  • Texas License - Speech-Language Pathology
  • Certificate of Clinical Competency, preferred
OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communication Disorders
  • Texas Licensure - Speech-Language Pathology
  • TEA Speech Therapy Certificate
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
I. INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT
  • Conduct comprehensive individual assessment for students referred to special education due to suspected speech impairments
  • Compile assessment data from a variety of sources into written assessment reports for presentation to the ARD committee
  • Comply with special education timelines
  • Determine eligibility for Special Education placement due to the presence of a speech impairment according to district guidelines, and make appropriate recommendations to the ARD committee
  • Conference with parents regarding assessment results and students' IEP progress
  • Participate in ARD meetings to assist in interpretation of assessment data and determination of appropriate goals and placement
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students
  • Plan and provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with the speech and language goals contained in Individual Education Plan
  • Collect and document data regarding students' performance on IEP objectives
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement functional communication activities and supports for the improvement of students' communication
  • Communicate effectively with administrators, colleagues, students and parents
  • Provide carry-over activities for transition of newly acquired speech patterns to other contexts and situations
  • Create and maintain records reflecting students' status and progress in Special Education
  • Attend and participate in district-level program meetings
  • Participate in staff development to support job responsibilities
  • Keep abreast of new research and information concerning students with speech impairments
  • Keep abreast of changes in local, state and federal special education policies and procedures
  • Compile reports as requested by AISD special education administration, including, but not limited to, SHARS, caseload reports, and end-of-year reports, in a timely manner
  • Participate in the district's Medicaid/SHARS initiatives, which allow the district to request Medicaid reimbursement for certain health-related services provided. The ARD/IEP committee determines SHARS services. If selected, participate in Random Moment in Time Study (RMTS).
  • Support assignment adjustment based on workload/caseload
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Curriculum Coordinator and Director of Special Education
II. STUDENT MANAGEMENT
  • SHARS / MAC / RMTS: Participate in the district's Medicaid initiatives. Arlington ISD participates in the School Health and Related Services (SHARS) and MAC programs, which allows the district to request Medicaid reimbursement for certain health-related services provided. The ARD/IEP committee determines SHARS services.
  • SHARS Providers: Train, provide, and document billable SHARS/direct medical services provided to students with SHARS services ordered in their IEP.
  • RMTS: If selected, participate in Random Moment in Time Study (RMTS).
III. MISCELLANEOUS
  • Any other responsibilities as designated by the Licensed Supervisor, Program Coordinator, and/or Director of Special Education.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise
  • Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress, with frequent interruptions.
