What is a radar operator?

A Radar Operator is responsible for monitoring and interpreting radar systems to track aircraft, ships, weather patterns, or other moving objects. They analyze radar data to detect potential threats, navigate vehicles, or assist with air traffic control. Radar Operators typically work in military, aviation, or maritime industries, ensuring safety and efficient coordination. They must be skilled in operating radar equipment, identifying anomalies, and responding quickly to changing situations. Training and technical knowledge are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a radar operator?

To thrive as a Radar Operator, you need keen attention to detail, spatial awareness, and a solid understanding of radar principles, often supported by technical training or military experience. Familiarity with radar display consoles, tracking software, and communications equipment is typically required, with additional certifications such as a security clearance often beneficial. Strong situational awareness, calmness under pressure, and effective teamwork and communication skills set standout candidates apart. These competencies are crucial because Radar Operators must reliably detect, track, and report targets or hazards to ensure safety and mission success in high-stakes environments.

What are the typical work environments and schedules for radar operators?

Radar Operators commonly work in control rooms, monitoring stations, or command centers as part of aviation, maritime, defense, or weather monitoring teams. Work schedules may include rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays, especially in organizations that require 24/7 surveillance or monitoring. Collaborative work with other operators, supervisors, and field personnel is frequent, as clear communication is vital to share findings and respond to potential threats or anomalies quickly. Depending on the employer, there may also be opportunities for specialized training or advancement into supervisory or technical roles.

How do you become a radar operator?

To become a radar operator, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by specialized training or technical education in radar systems, electronics, or related fields. Many positions require security clearances and on-the-job training to develop skills in operating radar equipment and interpreting data.

What do radar operators do?

Radar operators monitor and interpret radar signals to detect and track objects such as aircraft, ships, or weather formations. They use specialized equipment and must maintain focus in often high-pressure environments, typically working in shifts and requiring technical training or certification.

Job description

About The Team

Anduril's Space team is at the forefront of advancing national security capabilities in the space domain. Our mission is twofold: 1) develop autonomous satellite systems and space-based platforms, and 2) deliver critical ground and orbital software infrastructure at scale. We transform products and capabilities across space command and control (C2), mission management, and space operations from early concepts into fully operational systems by partnering closely with specialist engineering, operations, and production teams. Through our integrated approach, we design and deploy space software systems using advanced algorithms, distributed architectures, and resilient infrastructure-delivering reliable, mission-critical capabilities that support operators across orbital and ground-based assets. Space Systems hires software engineers and systems engineers who are excited to build across a diverse and powerful portfolio-from satellite operations software to space domain awareness platforms. Our teams contribute to highly capable autonomous space systems and ground software products that operate reliably in the most demanding mission environments, supporting the DOD and IC in defending our national interests in space.

About The Job

Anduril is hiring a Principal Radar Engineer to architect and deliver next-generation space-based radar systems that will redefine orbital ISR and tactical sensing. We're building software-defined RF payloads designed to break free from traditional satellite development timelines, and we need engineers who can operate at the intersection of advanced electromagnetics, real-time signal processing, and autonomous space operations. Depending on your level and fit, you'll lead a high-performing radar engineering team, direct cross-functional groups spanning payload development and mission software, or own a broader technical portfolio integrating space-based sensors with Anduril's C2 infrastructure. These roles combine hands-on technical leadership with people management and customer engagement, driving complex space programs from concept through launch to on-orbit operations. More senior candidates will additionally own multi-team strategy, executive-level customer relationships, and portfolio-scale outcomes.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Architect and implement RF sensing technologies for space-based radar payloads and multi-domain platforms
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define system architectures and concepts of operations for complex space missions
  • Conduct rigorous system-of-systems analysis to decompose mission requirements into radar subsystem specifications, link budgets, and performance trades
  • Develop and validate advanced radar techniques, waveforms, signal processing algorithms, and detection/tracking technologies
  • Create and drive consensus on internal technical roadmaps for space radar capabilities
  • Engage directly with DoD and IC customers to translate operational needs into technical requirements
  • Provide technical leadership to program management and business development teams to support strategic decision-making
  • Mentor and grow team members in radar theory, space systems engineering, and best practices
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • MS or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field (advanced degree preferred). Bachelors will be considered with exceptional experience.
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in radar systems engineering, including hardware, algorithms, or software development
  • Proven track record in a technical leadership role developing high-performance defense radar systems
  • Strong expertise in radar architecture, waveform design, radar modes, and system-level modeling
  • Understanding of radar antenna development, technology, and integration
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and Python for radar simulation and analysis
  • Prior experience supporting DoD or IC programs
  • Active U.S. Top Secret or TS/SCI clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Hands-on experience developing space-based RF sensing systems, including satellite payload design, orbital mechanics considerations, and space environmental effects (radiation, thermal, plasma) on radar performance
  • Proficiency in C++ for real-time embedded systems or signal processing pipelines
  • Experience with SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar), GMTI (Ground Moving Target Indicator), or space-based SIGINT modes
  • Familiarity with spacecraft operations, space mission design tools, or hardware-in-the-loop integration with ground stations
  • Understanding of space software standards (e.g., cFS, SpaceVPX) and modular payload architectures
  • Experience building and leading technical teams in the space domain, including defining organizational strategy and vision
  • Track record managing complex relationships with government customers across
