Job description

Ellis Park offers live thoroughbred horse racing during the summer season, with simulcast wagering 365 days a year, 300 HHR machines, exciting promotions, convenient sports betting, The Pea Patch Deli, Dade Park Grill and more.
JOB SUMMARY
An Outrider reports directly to the Racing Secretary. The incumbent maintains order and safety on the racetrack during the morning hours and throughout the live Racing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Rides horseback during the mornings and during Races to insure safety for everyone involved on the track.
  • Maintain orderly post parades during races.
  • Responsible for catches loose horses.
  • Assist in handling injured horses.
  • Provide care for ponies.
  • Approve all exercise riders, jockey and pony people.
  • Responsible for maintaining the condition of horses (e.g. clean horses, horse's shoes and feet).
  • Distribute hay and straw bales to stables.
  • Communicates with racing stewards.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with employees and the general public.
  • Work under pressure; maintain regular and punctual attendance including working odd and unusual hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Essential Physical Requirements:
  • Requires employee to hear, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, sit, talk, walk and repetitively use hands the majority of the time.
  • Requires employee to occasionally stand and walk.
  • Requires employee to push/pull, carry, lift, and slide/transfer 1-75 lbs.

Essential Mental Demands:
  • Requires the ability to solve problems, organize, plan, make decisions, interpret data, read and write the majority of the time.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must have relevant racing knowledge.
  • Must have three (3) or more years' experience working and riding horses.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a racing license through Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This job performs outdoors with exposure to hot/cold temperatures and fumes (e.g., cigarette/cigar smoke, fumes, gas, odors, dust, rain, dirt, etc.).
