Job description

MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
Nestled on more than 1,400 acres in the Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is a track rich in racing history. It has been the love of NASCAR racing and the thrill of a great time that has made it a favorite of race fans and drivers alike for more than 50 years. Michigan International Speedway has more than 12 campground and is the state of Michigan's largest registered campground. In addition to two great weekends of racing, the speedway is home to events throughout the year including the MIS Backyard Hockey Tournament, Faster Horses Festival and Nite Lites.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform firefighting and or track clean up/restoration activities including driving on-track emergency response equipment, operating various types of fire extinguishers, pumps, extrication equipment, laying hose, and diking/damning fluid leaks.
  • Perform emergency aid activities including administering first aid and providing other assistance as required
  • Participates in NASCAR on line & hands on training on an annual basis.
  • Operates radio & other communications equipment.
  • Inspects & maintains fire equipment, apparatus & facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment as necessary. Reports more significant issues to the Director of Track Services
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the speedway property and equipment; cleans & washes walls and floors of buildings; cares for grounds around the speedway property; makes minor repairs to your level of skill/training; washes, hangs & dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and test apparatus & equipment; washes, cleans & maintains the racing surface.

Position/Job Responsibilities:
Pit Road Firefighter: Provide fire suppression, first aid, & hazardous materials mitigation/clean up in competitors pit stalls.
Pit Road Supervisor: Provide supervision for Pit Road Firefighters, communicate with sanctioning body & security personnel on pit road to ensure competitor, team & guest safety .
Garage Firefighter: Provide fire suppression, first aid, & hazardous materials mitigation/clean up in the garage area.
Fuel Island Firefighter: Provide fire suppression, first aid, & hazardous materials mitigation/clean up at the mobile fuel island.
On-Track Firefighter: Provide fire suppression, vehicle stabilization, driver extrication, first aid, & hazardous materials mitigation/clean up on the race track.
Clean-Up Personnel: Provide debris removal, spill mitigation, assist with wall repairs, track washing & track restoration.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Firefighter certification
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at time of application
  • Must possess or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid driver's license without record of suspension or revocation.
  • No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history with the past 7 years.
  • Must be able to read and write the English language.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of fire suppression & prevention principles, procedures, techniques & equipment; Knowledge of Emergency Medical Services procedures, techniques, principals & equipment.
  • Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression & other emergency equipment.
  • Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials & fire prevention techniques
  • Ability to act effectively in emergency & stressful situations.
  • Skill in the operation of the listed tools & equipment
  • Ability to apply standard firefighting & EMS techniques to specific situation.
  • Ability to follow verbal & written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, other speedway departments, outside agencies and our guests.
  • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical efforts during emergency or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of intense heat or smoke.
