What is an R&D engineer?

An R&D (Research and Development) Engineering job involves designing, testing, and improving products, processes, or technologies. Engineers in this role work on innovation by researching new materials, methods, or techniques to enhance performance and efficiency. They collaborate with cross-functional teams, conduct experiments, analyze data, and develop prototypes. The goal is to bring cutting-edge solutions from concept to production while ensuring feasibility and compliance with industry standards.

Is R&D engineering a good career?

R&D engineering is a valuable career that involves developing new products and technologies, often requiring strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of engineering principles. It offers opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning, with roles typically requiring a bachelor's or higher degree in engineering or related fields. Job stability and growth depend on industry demand and individual expertise.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an R&D engineer?

To thrive in R&D Engineering, you need a solid understanding of scientific principles, problem-solving abilities, and an engineering degree, often with specialization in a particular discipline like mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, data analysis tools, prototyping equipment, and project management systems is typically expected, and certifications like Six Sigma or PMP can be advantageous. Strong collaboration, creativity, and effective communication skills help R&D engineers excel when tackling complex problems in multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are essential for driving innovation, ensuring technical feasibility, and efficiently bringing new products or processes from concept to reality.

What does an R&D engineer do?

A typical week in R&D Engineering involves a blend of hands-on experimentation, data analysis, team meetings, and documentation. You may spend part of your time designing experiments or prototypes, troubleshooting technical issues, collaborating with cross-functional teams (such as product development, manufacturing, or marketing), and presenting findings. In addition to technical tasks, you will likely participate in brainstorming sessions, literature reviews, and strategic planning. The pace can be dynamic and project timelines might shift based on new discoveries or business objectives, but the variety keeps the role engaging and intellectually stimulating.

Job description

Dyna-Tek is an advanced coatings developer, manufacturer and distributor of next-gen, advanced coatings; most of which are polysilazane and polysiloxane-based (Polysiloxazane). Our current technologies have earned us accounts in aerospace, transportation, outdoor sporting goods, die-cutting and more.

Armed with an existing patent portfolio as well as new filings underway, Dyna-Tek is looking for an individual who can lead the continued growth of our intellectual property portfolio centered around Platform Technologies in the field of Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Networks based on Polysiloxazane Chemistries. This will be a senior position with good autonomy who will report directly to the CEO of the Dyna-Tek.

This role will require someone capable and energized with handling hands-on lab work, analytical thinking, and new product development. This role is less about theory and more about executing experiments reliably, interpreting data, troubleshooting, and keeping projects on schedule.

This position will be in a senior position to lead innovation, influence technical direction, and be involved in the full cycle of new technologies and product development.

Educational, Expertise and Experience qualities sought:

1. Educational preferences:

  • BS/MS/PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or Chemical Engineering

2. Experienced bench chemist

  • Minimum of 5+ years in industry.
  • Technical laboratory skills (the foundation)
  • Wet chemistry & synthesis - sample prep, titrations, reaction setup, purification
  • Method development & validation - designing and refining analytical methods
  • Experience in developing coating formulations using coating characterization methods including:
  • NMR spectroscopy (with emphasis on solid-state and Si NMR),
  • FTIR Raman spectroscopy
  • BET surface area measurements
  • Thermogravimetric analysis
  • Quantitative assessments of coating properties such as thickness (ellipsometry, AFM) and hydrophobicity (contact angle analysis).

3. Experienced with coatings development, data analysis & scientific reasoning. We are NOT looking for a junior chemist. This person will have experience with designing experiments to answer specific questions, capable of troubleshooting failed reactions or inconsistent data, and applying root-cause analysis in QC/manufacturing environments.

4. Regulatory & Quality knowledge – GMP / GLP / ISO compliance, documentation practices (audit-ready notebooks, SOPs), Understanding of FDA/USP/ASTM standards

5. Effective Project Manager. This person must emphasize attention to detail, good communicator (writing reports, presenting data), time management and multitasking, and is comfortable with be held to mutually agreed upon deadlines.

Summary: This person will have the opportunity to become a member of the Executive Team at Dyna-Tek and play a meaningful role in the continued growth and directions of our company.

Compensation: Dyna-Tek subscribes, in part, to the belief that “you get paid in direct proportion to the difficulty of problems you solve.” However, we believe that lasting success comes from building a diverse, high-performing team whose collective expertise enables us to deliver innovative solutions, exceptional value, and industry-leading products that solve complex problems better than any other competing product solution in the world.

To start, this position will pay between $80 – $110,000 (potentially higher depending upon experience and capabilities), plus benefits.

Employment Type: Full Time
Years Experience: 5 - 10 years
Salary: $80,000 - $110,000 Annual
