Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's Washington DC, Charlotte, and Raleigh team is looking for a Data Analyst Intern to join our Federal Team for Summer 2026. The selected candidate will support a wide range of data-driven transportation safety, planning, and research projects for the state Department of Transportation, federal agencies, and local governments. The position will involve working with large datasets, conducting statistical analysis, developing visualizations, and supporting research and technical documentation. The ideal candidate is interested in transportation safety, statistical modeling, data science, and emerging analytical methods. This position provides an opportunity to work on real-world projects involving roadway safety analysis, vulnerable road user analysis, systemic safety screening, behavioral analysis, and data visualization.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and interprets data. ย 
    • Use spreadsheets, statistical software, and programming languages to process and analyze data.
    • Conduct statistical analyses, trend analyses, before-and-after evaluations, and exploratory data analysis.
    • Develop charts, tables, and visualizations for reports and presentations.
    • Assist with transportation safety analysis, systemic safety screening, and risk-based prioritization studies.
    • Support data collection, cleaning, quality control, and integration from multiple sources.
  • Support research and technical analysis tasks.
    • Assist with literature reviews, data summaries, and technical documentation.
    • Help prepare technical memorandums, presentations, and analytical reports.
    • Clearly communicate findings and conclusions from analyses.
  • Support data systems and analytical workflows.
    • Troubleshoot issues related to datasets and analytical processes.
    • Assist with database management and data organization.
    • Import, export, and organize data to fulfill project needs.
    • Support automation and reproducible analytical workflows using programming and scripting tools.
  • Collaborate with project teams.
    • Communicate regularly and effectively with team members and project managers.
    • Work independently while also supporting multidisciplinary teams.
    • Participate in meetings and contribute to project discussions.
  • Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and VHB policies and procedures.ย

Qualifications

Our best estimate of the hourly salary range for this position located in Washington DC is $19/hr. - $30/hr. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
