What Does a Quality Manager Do?

As a quality manager, your job is to oversee Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) for each product or service assigned to you. Your duties include guaranteeing products and services meet the standards of your organization, keeping management aware of any problems with production, and ensuring that the manufacturing process goes as smoothly as possible. This job has different aspects depending on where a product or service is in the development cycle. Products that are still being designed need QA to make creation as smooth as possible, while released products require QC to ensure the expected level of quality is maintained.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quality Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Manager, you need expertise in quality control processes, data analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant degree and experience in quality management systems. Familiarity with ISO standards, Six Sigma, and software tools like Minitab or SAP is highly valued, along with certifications such as CQE or Six Sigma Green/Black Belt. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication are crucial soft skills for driving continuous improvement and facilitating cross-departmental collaboration. These skills ensure product and process excellence, regulatory adherence, and organizational efficiency.

Is QC a high paying job?

Quality Managers typically earn salaries that are above average compared to many other roles, with pay varying based on industry, experience, and location. They often hold certifications like Six Sigma or ISO auditor credentials, which can influence earning potential. Overall, QC-related roles can be considered well-paying within manufacturing, healthcare, and technology sectors.

Employer & Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, healthcare, and service industries to lead quality programs.
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared with Quality Supervisor due to overlapping responsibilities and career progression.

The main difference between a Quality Manager and a Quality Supervisor lies in their scope and responsibilities. A Quality Manager focuses on strategic quality initiatives, process improvements, and managing teams at a higher level, often requiring advanced certifications. In contrast, a Quality Supervisor typically oversees daily operations, supervises staff directly, and implements quality procedures. Both roles are essential in maintaining quality standards, but the manager role involves broader planning and leadership functions.

What is the job of a quality manager?

A quality manager oversees an organization’s quality assurance and control processes to ensure products or services meet specified standards. They develop quality policies, conduct audits, analyze data, and implement improvements, often using tools like Six Sigma or ISO standards. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and certification such as CQE or CQE are common requirements for this role.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

For a Quality Manager, annual salaries of $300,000 or more are typically found in senior or executive-level roles within large organizations, especially in industries like manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, or technology. Achieving this level often requires extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership responsibilities, with some roles including bonuses and stock options that contribute to total compensation.

What are some common challenges Quality Managers face when implementing new quality standards across teams?

Quality Managers often encounter resistance to change when introducing new quality standards, as team members may be accustomed to established processes. Ensuring consistent understanding and adoption across departments requires clear communication, comprehensive training, and ongoing support. Additionally, balancing the need for compliance with production deadlines can be challenging, so Quality Managers must collaborate closely with operations, engineering, and leadership teams to align goals and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A Quality Manager typically earns less than $10,000 a month without a degree, as this role usually requires relevant experience and sometimes certifications. High-paying jobs that can reach or exceed this income level without a degree often include sales, real estate, or entrepreneurship, which rely on skills, networking, and performance rather than formal education.

Job description

Quality Manager -- Additive Manufacturing Division

Seattle, WA | Reports to Global Director of Quality | Additive Manufacturing Division Scope

Build. Lead. Transform.

If you thrive in the details and the big picture, this role is for you.

Quickparts is hiring a Quality Manager to serve as the cornerstone of our quality management system (QMS) for all additive manufacturing (AM) processes, including Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Electron Beam Melting (EBM), and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). This is a critical leadership role. You will maintain AS9100 Rev D and ISO 9001:2015 certifications, drive a culture of continuous improvement, and ensure all flight-critical and safety-critical components meet the highest standards of dimensional accuracy, material integrity, and traceability.

You will own our QMS governance, personally lead internal audit programs, and be the driving force behind first-article qualification, production approval, and non-conformance resolution while interfacing directly with customers, suppliers, regulatory bodies, and internal engineering teams.

Why This Role Matters

Our Quality function is critical to customer trust, regulatory compliance, and scalable growth. As Quality Manager, you will:

âś” Own, ensure compliance, maintain, and continually improve the AS9100 Rev D and ISO 9001:2015 QMS

âś” Guarantee that flight-critical and safety-critical AM components meet all requirements

âś” Lead the internal audit program and serve as the primary liaison with external registrars

âś” Direct the Non-Conforming Material (NCM) and Corrective Action / Preventive Action (CAPA) programs

âś” Champion a quality-first culture through metrics visibility, recognition, and Lean/Six Sigma initiatives

What You’ll Do

  • Establish and enforce process qualification protocols per ASTM F3187, NASA-STD-6030, and applicable customer/NADCAP requirements
  • Oversee build parameter qualification, machine validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and periodic requalification for all AM platforms
  • Define and manage material qualification programs for metallic and polymer powder/filament feedstocks
  • Lead First Article Inspection (FAI) activities per customer requirements including AS9102 Rev B
  • Manage post-processing quality controls: HIP, heat treatment, surface finishing, and NDT (CT scanning, FPI, radiography)
  • Direct the Non-Conforming Material (NCM) program, initiate MRB dispositions, and coordinate with engineering
  • Own the CAPA system, ensuring root cause analysis rigor (8D, Ishikawa, 5-Why) and timely closure
  • Evaluate incoming material, source inspection activities, and manage Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCARs)
  • Support customer source inspections, DQR visits, and surveillance audits
  • Prepare and review quality plans, inspection and test plans (ITPs), and Data Packages / Certificates of Conformance
  • Maintain Export Control (ITAR/EAR) awareness for technical data sharing with customers and suppliers
  • Lead, develop, and mentor the Quality Team, designing and delivering QMS training programs
  • Track and trend scrap, rework, and field escapes, presenting metrics to leadership via monthly quality dashboards

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing, or a related technical discipline
  • 7+ years of progressive quality management experience, with at least 3 years in aerospace, defense, or high-reliability manufacturing
  • Demonstrated AS9100 Rev D and ISO 9001:2015 expertise (Lead Auditor certification such as CQA or IRCA strongly preferred)
  • Proficiency with AS9102 Rev B First Article Inspection and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T per ASME Y14.5-2018)
  • Working knowledge of NADCAP accreditation requirements (Heat Treat, NDT, Chemical Processing) applicable to the AM supply chain
  • Proven track record leading CAPA programs using structured root cause analysis tools (8D, DMAIC, RCCA)
  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC), MSA, Cpk analysis, and quality data management systems (QMS/ERP/MES)
  • Familiarity with U.S. export regulations (ITAR/EAR) as applied to aerospace hardware and technical data
  • Ability to travel up to 10% (supplier audits, customer visits, conferences)
  • Preferred qualifications include: hands-on AM qualification experience (ASTM F3187, AMS7003/7004), ASQ CQM/OE or CQE, Six Sigma Black Belt, NADCAP Lead Auditor, and familiarity with digital thread/MBD methodologies and FAA/EASA Part 21 PAH requirements

Why You’ll Love It Here

  • Direct access to CEO and executive leadership
  • Real ownership — your work shapes the company
  • High-growth, global organization
  • Complex technical challenges
  • Ability to leave a legacy system behind
  • Strong culture of accountability and collaboration
  • Flexible work environment
  • Competitive compensation
  • 401K Employer match
  • Excellent health and wellness benefits
  • Generous Paid Time Off - Recharge with ample PTO, including vacation days, sick leave, and holidays
