What is a quality engineer?

A quality engineer ensures that the products manufactured by a company are meeting company and government quality control standards. As a quality engineer, your responsibilities include assessing and developing quality assurance protocols, examining products for compliance, and training teams to follow your policies. You also record data regarding production to track quality and produce the documentation need to communicate concerns throughout the company. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) regulates the profession and offers a path to become a certified quality engineer (CQE).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Engineer, you need a solid grounding in engineering principles, quality assurance methodologies, and a relevant degree such as in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Six Sigma, ISO standards, statistical process control (SPC), and quality management systems (QMS) is typically required, and certifications like CQE (Certified Quality Engineer) are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues, collaborate with teams, and drive continuous improvement. These skills ensure that products and processes consistently meet standards, minimize defects, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

How does a quality engineer typically collaborate with other departments to ensure product quality?

Quality Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, design, and supply chain to uphold product standards. They often participate in team meetings, review process documentation, and coordinate root cause analyses with engineers and operators. Effective communication and proactive problem-solving are key, as they must ensure that quality requirements are clearly understood and implemented throughout each stage of production. This collaborative approach not only helps resolve issues quickly but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement across the organization.

What is the difference between Quality Engineer vs Quality Technician?

AspectQuality EngineerQuality Technician
ResponsibilitiesDesigning quality systems, process improvements, root cause analysisInspecting products, conducting tests, recording quality data
Required SkillsAnalytical skills, problem-solving, knowledge of quality standardsAttention to detail, testing procedures, data collection
CertificationsASQ CQE, Six SigmaASQ CQPA, basic quality certifications
Work EnvironmentOffice, manufacturing plants, cross-functional teamsManufacturing floors, labs, inspection stations

Quality Engineers focus on developing and improving quality systems and processes, while Quality Technicians primarily perform inspections and tests to ensure product quality. Both roles are essential in maintaining standards, but they differ in scope and responsibilities.

How much does a quality engineer earn?

The average salary for a quality engineer varies by location and experience but typically ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with certifications like Six Sigma or ISO may earn higher salaries. Salaries can also be influenced by industry, company size, and specific skills such as proficiency with quality management tools.

What degree do you need for a quality engineer?

A quality engineer typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, or a related field. Relevant skills include knowledge of quality management systems and tools like Six Sigma or ISO standards, and some roles may prefer or require professional certifications such as ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE).

Job Overview

At Ingersoll Randโ€™s Monroe, Louisiana facility, precision-engineered products play a critical role in equipment customers depend on every day. The site manufactures and services THOMAS air compressor and vacuum pump products within an OEM portfolio serving medical, laboratory, environmental, and industrial markets. In this handsโ€‘on manufacturing environment, quality is measured not just by what leaves the line, but by how reliably the product performs for the customerโ€”creating a meaningful opportunity to strengthen processes, systems, and overall plant performance.

Weโ€™re seeking a Quality Engineer who is a handsโ€‘on individual contributor focused on strengthening quality performance across the Monroe facility by turning quality challenges into sustainable process improvements. Rather than simply reacting to defects, this engineer will look at quality through the customerโ€™s eyesโ€”identifying trends, uncovering root causes, and building the processes, standards, controls, and corrective actions that prevent issues from recurring.

Partnering closely with Engineering, Operations, Production, Customer Service, and Supply Chain, this role will apply proven manufacturing quality practicesโ€”including process controls, quality metrics, and customerโ€‘focused problem solving to improve process capability, reduce cost of poor quality, address customer complaints and returns, and strengthen overall product performance.

The ideal candidate brings handsโ€‘on manufacturing quality experience, can quickly understand the operation, and is comfortable taking ownership and driving improvements with a high degree of independence. This is an opportunity for a builderโ€”not simply a maintainer: someone energized by improving what exists, creating what is missing, and helping establish stronger, more sustainable quality practices as the operation continues to grow.

Responsibilities
  • Lead investigations of customer complaints, warranty issues, and internal concfomromances using structured problemโ€‘solving methodologies such as 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone, and PFMEA, implementing effective corrective and preventative actions.
  • Support and continuously improve the siteโ€™s Quality Management System, ensuring compliance with ISO 9001and applicable company quality standards.
  • Conduct internal process audits, support customer and certification audits, and drive timely resolution of findings.
  • Analyze quality, manufacturing, inspection, and warranty data to identify trends, reduce defects, minimize scrap and rework, and improve operational performance.
  • Develop and maintain quality planning and validation documentation, including PPAPs, Process Flow Diagrams, PFMEAs, Control Plans, Measurement System Analyses (MSA), and Process Capability Studies.
  • Support process validation and qualification activities, including IQ, OQ, and PQ protocols where applicable.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to develop process controls, improve product quality, and ensure customer requirements are met.
  • Provide qualityโ€‘related training and guidance, promote continuous improvement initiatives, and participate in Kaizen and operational excellence activities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum three (3+) years of experience in manufacturing quality, quality engineering, or a related technical role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience using root cause analysisand corrective action methodologies to investigate and resolve manufacturing or product quality issues.
  • Experience working within an ISO 9001quality management system, including exposure to internal audits, corrective actions, or qualityโ€‘system compliance activities. Demonstrated ability to analyze quality data, identify trends or process issues, and communicate findings and recommended actions across manufacturing, engineering, or operations teams.
Core Competencies
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset โ€“ Looks beyond immediate fixes to identify opportunities for sustainable process, product, and quality improvement.
  • Analytical Problem Solving โ€“ Uses data, quality metrics, root cause analysis, and sound judgment to identify issues, evaluate trends, and develop effective solutions.
  • Customer Focus โ€“ Evaluates quality through the customerโ€™s perspective and takes action to improve product performance, reliability, and overall customer satisfaction.
  • Ownership & Followโ€‘Through โ€“ Takes personal accountability for commitments, respects deadlines, drives actions to completion, and operates effectively without constant direction.
  • Collaboration & Influence โ€“ Builds productive relationships across Engineering, Operations, Production, Supply Chain, and other functions to resolve issues and advance quality initiatives.
  • Quality & Compliance Excellence โ€“ Maintains high standards for quality, process discipline, documentation, and compliance while supporting effective quality management systems.
Preferences
  • Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or similar quality certification.
  • Experience with PPAP, PFMEA, MSA, SPC, and Process Capability Studies.
  • Experience supporting ISO 9001certified manufacturing environments.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, blueprint reading, and metrology systems.
  • Experience in machining, assembly, pump manufacturing, or other industrial manufacturing environments.
Travel & Work Arrangements
  • This position is fully siteโ€‘based at the Monroe, Louisiana manufacturing facility.
  • Occasional travel may be required to support customer audits, supplier visits, training, or other business needs.
