What is a quality associate?

Quality Associates are professionals responsible for ensuring that products or services meet established quality standards before reaching customers. They assist in monitoring production processes, performing inspections, and documenting quality issues or defects. Quality Associates also help implement quality control procedures and work closely with other departments to resolve any quality-related problems. Their role is essential in maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements and ensuring customer satisfaction.

What does a quality associate do?

A quality associate works as part of a team, typically in the manufacturing industry, to inspect and audit a factory to ensure that production follows the necessary protocols and delivers the expected results. In this role, your responsibilities involve all aspects of quality control. You test procedures and make adjustments as required to meet goals and deadlines. As part of your duties, you log your findings and implement a plan for the smooth operation of the line for the long-term. Some people in this career specialize in a particular facet of the manufacturing process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Associate, you need attention to detail, knowledge of quality control principles, and often a degree in science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with quality management systems (such as ISO 9001), statistical analysis tools, and documentation software is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities help you collaborate across teams and address process issues effectively. These skills and qualities ensure that products and processes consistently meet standards, minimizing errors and maintaining compliance.

What are some common challenges quality associates face when working on cross-functional teams?

Quality Associates often collaborate with departments like manufacturing, engineering, and regulatory affairs to ensure product quality standards are met. One common challenge is balancing differing priorities—while production teams may be focused on output and speed, Quality Associates must prioritize compliance and thorough documentation. Navigating these competing interests requires strong communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Building positive relationships across teams and fostering a culture of quality can help overcome these challenges and ensure successful outcomes.

A Quality Technician usually performs hands-on inspections, testing, and data collection directly on the production floor. Both roles are essential in maintaining product quality but differ in their daily tasks and work environments.

Job description

Quality Technician | $22–$24/hr

MVS Metals (Owen Industries) – Sioux City, IA | 1st Shift | Monday–Thursday, 4x10 | Full-Time

Every Friday Off. Doing Work That Actually Matters.

MVS Metals is looking for a Quality Technician who knows their way around a CMM, understands GD&T, and takes pride in getting dimensions right the first time. You’ll be working with advanced inspection technology — Virtek laser QC systems, PC-DMIS-driven portable CMMs, and UniPoint — on parts that go into real industrial applications for real customers.

The schedule is Monday through Thursday, 10-hour days, which means you have every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to yourself. If you want a quality role with serious technical depth and a schedule that actually gives you a life outside work — this is it.

What You’ll Do

  • Program and operate portable CMM (PCMM) equipment using PC-DMIS software to conduct dimensional layouts and first-article inspections
  • Perform quality control inspections using Virtek laser projection/tracking systems to verify part conformance to design intent
  • Interpret 3D models and drawings in CAD/SolidWorks to build inspection programs, apply GD&T callouts, and identify critical characteristics
  • Create and maintain inspection specifications and control plans within UniPoint
  • Support the PPAP process — execute required measurements, generate dimensional and capability data, and prepare documentation for customer submission
  • Document inspection results, nonconformances, and corrective actions in the quality management system
  • Maintain calibration schedules and verify accuracy of inspection equipment
  • Collaborate with production and quality personnel to resolve dimensional discrepancies and drive continuous improvement

What We’re Looking For

  • 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing quality control or inspection role
  • PC-DMIS and portable CMM experience preferred
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting CAD models, technical drawings, and GD&T callouts; SolidWorks experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of GD&T fundamentals
  • Strong attention to detail and solid problem-solving skills
  • Ability to write clear, accurate inspection reports and quality documentation
  • Exposure to PPAP, APQP, or automotive/industrial quality tools a plus
  • Associate's degree or technical certificate in manufacturing, quality, or engineering a plus; high school diploma or GED required

Compensation & Benefits

$22–$24/hr based on experience

Monday–Thursday schedule — every Friday off, 4x10-hour days

Health, Dental & Vision insurance

Life/AD&D and Short & Long-Term Disability coverage

401(k) after 6 months

PTO and paid holidays — accrual begins immediately

Medical, Dental, Vision, and Disability benefits begin the 1st of the month after 30 days of employment.

Why MVS Metals?
