Position Summary

The Material Quality Technician will be responsible for assessing material dimensional and functional integrity using multiple measurement technologies. The material to be evaluated includes incoming from suppliers, work-in-process subsystems, and final assemblies. The measurement methodologies include laser, physical gauges. The Quality Technician is responsible for compiling data, generating inspection reports.


Position Responsibilities

Build Quality into the Manufacturing Process

  • Conduct receiving inspection in an efficient and timely manner in accordance with procedures of supplier parts and assemblies as necessary.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to Supplier Quality Engineers (SQE’s), Production personnel and/or Supply Chain in a clear, concise, timely manner.
  • Makes quality decisions about suspect parts and disposition of defect material both from supplier and internal production though the Material Review Board (MRB) Process.
  • Using core tools, provides a proactive approach to building quality into the process rather than inspecting for quality.
  • Assist in the development of incoming inspection fixturing and gaging.
  • Assist with development of Poke-yoke processes where applicable.
  • Adhere to the QMS such as control plans, PPAP, FMEA, calibrations, etc.
  • Conduct and maintain internal inspection program throughout manufacturing process.
  • Assist in the coordination of the calibration program on gages, torque wrenches, etc.
  • Adhere to compliance with nationally recognized standards.
  • Be a support to the internal product groups, management, new product development and Engineering and Supplier Quality Engineering, as required.

Problem Troubleshooting

  • Support Customer, Material, Production & Supplier Quality Engineering as necessary in Field, Internal and Supplier Incident reports plus Corrective Action report investigations.
  • Participate in, and work with cross-functional team to develop internal resolution of manufacturing non-conformances and prevent recurrence.
  • Support investigation of product quality problems, determine root cause, gather and analyze data and implement corrective action to reduce or eliminate cause.
  • Identifies opportunities and communicate with Quality Engineering for change requests to product engineering related to drawing corrections, product assembly problems, etc.
  • Assist in the tracking and measurement of supplier First Pass Yield (FPY) and the development of action plans for improvement.

Continuous Improvement/Lean Enterprise

  • Support the implementation of the 5-S workplace organization processes in the Receiving Inspection area through direct project involvement and through fellow team members.
  • Establish and utilize frameworks and systems, including tools such as visual management, problem solving, standard work and kaizen.
  • Ability to cooperate and commit in a team environment to achieve goals and deliverables.
  • Resolve difficult or complicated challenges using the problem-solving process.


Employee Training and Awareness

    • Complete within one year Quality-related QA modules as agreed
    • Achieve within 2 years, relevant ASQ certification.
    • Be an active participant in quality-related improvement activities with cross-functional team members as needed.
    • Work with all levels of associates to learn all manufacturing processes from raw materials, and sub-assemblies to End of Line (EOL) validation when applicable.
    • Read blueprints and use gages and other inspection equipment to properly inspect incoming parts, finished products and raw materials and collect associated data as needed.
    • Be a participant in CI and learning across all functional areas through training and communication of quality initiatives.
    • Be recognized as a go-to person for other Quality team members as well as manufacturing personnel for solutions to acceptability of product and/or processes.


Position Qualifications

  • 3-4 years’ experience in quality related work in a manufacturing environment or related experience and to be able to develop into a Quality Technician III within 18 months.
  • Minimum intermediate proficiency in Microsoft suite of tools
  • High school diploma


Ideal Candidates Will Also Have

  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to operate a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) with an understanding of touch probe and scanning capabilities.
  • Intermediate understanding and use of quality core tools such as Control Plans, SPC (Statistical Process Control), PPAP (Production Part Approval Process).
  • Intermediate use of analytical and problem-solving skills along with demonstratable verbal, writing and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Awareness of nationally recognized standards such as ISO, AIAG, ASME, etc.
  • Background in heavy metal fabrication, sheet metal manufacturing, welding, powder coating paint systems and electrical & electronic component assembly a plus.
  • Intermediate understanding and interpretation of blueprints.
