Job description

The Pharmacy Technician - Automation supports the maintenance, optimization, and expansion of pharmacy automation systems across Cleveland Clinic. This newly created role is driven by the continued growth of pharmacy services and the opening of the Neurological Institute, which will add more than 100 new pieces of automation equipment requiring ongoing support. Responsibilities include maintaining and troubleshooting automated dispensing cabinets, medication storage technologies, refrigeration units, and other pharmacy automation systems to ensure reliable operation and medication availability. The technician will support the deployment and implementation of new automation equipment, perform technical problem-solving and system optimization, and assist with projects related to automation upgrades and operational improvements. This role also provides coverage for automation team members and helps ensure continuity of pharmacy operations through proactive equipment management, collaboration with pharmacy staff, and support of technology-driven initiatives.

A caregiver in this position will work Monday through Friday on a rotating schedule, alternating every 12 weeks between shifts of 6:30am to 3:00pm, 10am - 6:30pm and 2:00pm to 10:30pm. This role includes participation in an on-call and weekend rotation approximately every two weeks, followed by roughly six weeks without on-call or weekend responsibilities. Holiday coverage is aligned with the on-call schedule.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Maintain automated dispensing systems and address questions or concernsregardingthe system.
  • Routinely troubleshoot pharmacy automation equipment, drawer failures, medication jams, fail counts, etc.
  • Assistwith coordinating the expansion of Pyxis units across all inpatient nursing units, procedure areas, OR suites and hospital outpatient areas
  • Provide on-call coverage for urgent issues.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • A high school diploma orGED
  • 1 year of experience working as a Pharmacy Technician with automated dispending cabinets (i.e. Pyxis) or similar pharmacy automation systems required

Must meet all of the following license and certification combination requirements at the time of application:

  • Must hold an active registration as a Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP)

  • It is required, within 18 months from the date of hire: Must obtain a national certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcare Association (NHA) AND Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy
  • Upon hire, registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy is required within 6 months

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program
  • Experience working as an inpatient Pharmacy Technician

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, reaching, stretching and sitting for prolonged periods; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispending, compounding, and IV functions of the job.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $22.50

Maximum hourly: $32.00
