Python Data Analyst information

What does a Python data analyst do?

A Python Data Analyst leverages the Python programming language to collect, process, and analyze large sets of data. They use tools and libraries like Pandas, NumPy, and Matplotlib to clean data, perform statistical analysis, and create visualizations that help organizations make data-driven decisions. Their role often involves extracting insights from complex datasets, automating data workflows, and communicating findings to stakeholders through reports or dashboards. Python Data Analysts play a crucial part in turning raw data into actionable business intelligence.

What does a Python data analyst do?

As a Python data analyst, you use the Python programming language to develop tools for data mining, analysis, and data visualization. You typically develop a script to meet the specific data needs of your client or employer. Then, you test your code and perform debugging duties before deploying it in a live environment. Some data analysts also have algorithm creation responsibilities. In this case, after creating and testing an algorithm, you use Python with your algorithm to interpret data. You also develop reports to show to your clients or employers, and you may code a web app or interface that clients can use to visualize data sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python data analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid grasp of statistics, and proficiency in Python programming, often supported by a degree in data science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis libraries like pandas and NumPy, visualization tools such as Matplotlib or Seaborn, and experience with data querying languages like SQL are typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication help you derive insights and present findings clearly to stakeholders. These skills and qualities are vital for transforming raw data into actionable business intelligence and supporting data-driven decision-making.

How do Python data analysts typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Python Data Analysts often work closely with teams such as marketing, finance, and product development to provide data-driven insights that inform business decisions. They regularly participate in cross-functional meetings to understand departmental objectives, gather requirements for data analysis, and present their findings in an accessible manner. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical results into actionable recommendations are essential, as analysts often act as a bridge between technical data and non-technical stakeholders.

What is the difference between Python Data Analyst vs Data Scientist?

AspectPython Data AnalystData Scientist
Required SkillsPython, SQL, data visualization, statistical analysisPython, R, machine learning, statistical modeling
Work EnvironmentBusiness analytics, reporting, data cleaningAdvanced modeling, predictive analytics, research
Industry UsageFinance, marketing, healthcare, retailTech, finance, research, AI development

While both roles require Python and data analysis skills, Data Scientists typically engage in more complex modeling and machine learning, whereas Python Data Analysts focus on data cleaning, visualization, and reporting to support business decisions.

Is Python good for data analysts?

Python is widely used by data analysts due to its simplicity, extensive libraries like pandas and NumPy, and strong community support. It enables efficient data manipulation, analysis, and visualization, making it a valuable skill for the role.

Job description

At Lyft, our purpose is to serve and connect. We aim to achieve this by cultivating a work environment where all team members belong and have the opportunity to thrive.

Data is at the heart of Lyft Business's products and decision-making. We're looking to hire a Data Analyst to build the tools and analytics that drive revenue for the sales organization behind Lyft's B2B portfolio — a multi-billion-dollar book of business spanning healthcare, business travel, corporate commute, automotive, and transit. This team has real say in what gets built.

You will be the analytical partner to our Sales and account teams — someone who can translate findings into a clear narrative for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities:
  • Build the tools and analytics sales leaders use to grow their accounts — pacing views, account-health signals, territory and segment views that change what a rep or manager does next
  • Field requests from Sales, Product, Finance, Legal, leadership, and external stakeholders, and decide what's worth building, what's worth a sharp piece of analysis, and what's out of scope
  • Build and maintain production data pipelines, and automate recurring workflows, with documentation and validation clear enough that a teammate — or an AI agent — can use them without asking you first
  • Define what the team's core metrics mean and where they live, so every dashboard, report, and tool returns the same answer to the same question
  • Contribute to the internal tools and semantic layer — prompts, context, and guardrails — that let stakeholders query B2B data in natural language and trust what comes back
  • Translate insights into a cohesive narrative and present technical findings to senior leadership and non-technical audiences
Experience:
  • Degree (or related work experience) with a focus in analytics, statistics, economics, computer science, or other quantitative fields
  • 3+ years of experience in a data analytics or business intelligence role, ideally supporting a sales, go-to-market, or B2B organization
  • Proficiency in SQL — able to read, write, and review structured, efficient queries on large data sets, whether you wrote them yourself or an AI coding assistant did; you own the correctness of every query and result before it reaches stakeholders
  • Experience building production data assets — pipelines, data models, or orchestrated tables (Airflow, dbt, or similar) — not only ad-hoc analysis
  • Proficiency in a data visualization tool like Tableau, Hex, Mode, or similar
  • Experience with sales or account analytics — pipeline, bookings, pacing to target, account segmentation — is a strong plus
  • Experience with Python for data analysis and automation is a strong plus
  • Commercial instinct paired with a builder's instinct — a track record of turning a recurring request into a durable tool or dataset instead of answering it one more time
  • A track record of influencing business decisions through analysis, and an ownership mindset toward the metrics and datasets you build
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to tackle ambiguous problems, break them down, and deliver clear, actionable insights
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex data to a variety of stakeholders clearly and compellingly
  • A strong attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy and integrity
  • Ability to collaborate across functions, manage competing priorities, and drive projects to completion
Benefits:
  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options with additional programs available when enrolled
  • Mental health benefits
  • Family building benefits
  • Child care and pet benefits
  • 401(k) plan with company match to help save for your future
  • In addition to 12 observed holidays, salaried team members have discretionary paid time off, hourly team members have 15 days paid time off
  • 18 weeks of paid parental leave. Biological, adoptive, and foster parents are all eligible
  • Subsidized commuter benefits
  • Monthly Lyft credits and complimentary Lyft Pink membership

Lyft is an equal opportunity employer committed to an inclusive workplace that fosters belonging. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regards to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, age, genetic information, or any other basis prohibited by law. We also consider qualified applicants with criminal histories consistent with applicable federal, state and local law.

Lyft highly values having employees working in-office to foster a collaborative work environment and company culture. This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Team Members will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Lyft considers working in the office at least 3 days per week to be an essential function of this hybrid role. Additionally, hybrid roles have the flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year. #Hybrid

The expected base pay range for this position in the San Francisco area is $98,000 - $122,500, not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location.
