The SCA's Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City's approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects.

Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

Job Description SummaryThe Architect - Level A, B or C reports to an A&E Director, Managing Architect or Managing Engineer, or a higher assignment level Architect or Engineer, and is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, to achieve the objectives of the Authority.Job Description

Responsibilities include:

Levels A/B/C

Provides overall architectural coordination for projects; performs and/or supervises the preparation of scope, pre- schematic, schematic, preliminary and construction documents, including reports, drawings and specifications. Works with a wide range of technical, professional, managerial and support personnel as well as outside consultants, contractors, vendors and various government agencies

May function as project or team leader, reporting to A&E Director, Managing Architect or Engineer to plan and coordinate work with other Architects and Engineers

May direct lower-level Architects or Engineers, Quality Assurance Specialist, Technical Inspectors, Associate Architects/Engineers and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, working on several less complex design projects, up to and including small primary schools, partial modernizations, additions, leased space planning and Capital Improvement Projects.

Conducts site observations, prepares field reports, assists in the preparation of punch lists and supervises the review of contractor's submittals

Ensures compliance to codes, standards, and that the project is completed on schedule; resolves any problems that occur.

Performs design review of projects

Assists in preparing new design standards and procedures.

Mentor and trains staff on SCA standards and procedures.

Handle multiple projects at the same time.

May be required to sign, seal and file drawings and sign and seal other documents

May serve as a member of project teams

Maintains and develops general understanding of architectural and engineering principles.

Additional Responsibilities Levels B/C:

Functions primarily as project or team leader, reporting to a A&E Director, Managing Architect or Engineer to plan and coordinate work with other Architects and Engineers and may direct Architects, Engineers, Quality Assurance Specialist, Technical Inspectors, Associate Architects, Associate Engineers, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, working on multiple, highly complex, difficult design projects such as large primary schools, large intermediate schools, high schools, special types of buildings (e.g. special education schools), full modernizations, large additions, specialized and/or numerous Capital Improvement Projects and major design and exploration programs.

May act as a discipline leader in an A & E Design Studio/Division to train and develop staff in the discipline.

May act as Managing Architect in the absence of the Managing Architect.

Participates in cross-studio/division seminars and training workshops

Reviews and checks studio/division projects for quality control

Participates in employee performance evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Level A requires: Valid New York State registration as an Architect. Current NYS registration must be maintained for duration of employment.

Level B requires: Valid New York State registration as an Architect. Current NYS registration must be maintained for duration of employment; and three years full time paid experience as a Registered Architect, two years of which must be as a project architect; project, team, or squad leader; or comparable level of responsibility.

Level C requires: Valid New York State registration as an Architect. Current NYS registration must be maintained for duration of employment; and six years full time paid experience as a Registered Architect, three years of which must be as a project architect; project, team, or squad leader; or comparable level of responsibility.
