What is public sector economics?

Public sector economics is the study of how government policies impact the economy, focusing on government revenue (such as taxes) and expenditures (such as public goods and services). Economists in this field analyze the role of government in correcting market failures, redistributing income, and promoting economic efficiency. They also evaluate the effectiveness of fiscal policies and the impact of government intervention on resource allocation. Public sector economics helps inform decisions on budgeting, public spending, and regulatory measures to achieve social and economic objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by public sector economists when analyzing government policies?

Public sector economists often encounter challenges related to limited or imperfect data, political constraints, and the complexity of quantifying social impacts. They must balance the need for rigorous analysis with the realities of policy timelines and stakeholder interests. Additionally, communicating technical findings in a way that is accessible to policymakers and the public is crucial for effective implementation. These factors make adaptability and strong communication skills essential for success in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a public sector economist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Public Sector Economist, you need a strong background in economics, quantitative analysis, and policy evaluation, often backed by an advanced degree in economics or public policy. Familiarity with statistical software such as STATA or R, economic modeling tools, and knowledge of government data sources is typically expected. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills help convey complex findings to stakeholders and work within multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for informing evidence-based policy decisions and effectively addressing public economic challenges.

What is the difference between Public Sector Economics vs Public Policy Analysis?

AspectPublic Sector EconomicsPublic Policy Analysis
FocusEconomic analysis of government policies, public finance, and resource allocationEvaluation of policy options, program effectiveness, and policy development
Required CredentialsEconomics degree, often with specialization in public finance or public economicsPublic policy, political science, or related fields; often with policy analysis certifications
Work EnvironmentGovernment agencies, think tanks, research institutionsGovernment departments, NGOs, research organizations
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in economic policy formulation and analysisUsed in policy development, program evaluation, and advocacy

Public Sector Economics primarily focuses on analyzing government financial policies and resource allocation from an economic perspective. In contrast, Public Policy Analysis emphasizes evaluating and developing policies across various sectors, often incorporating broader social and political considerations. Both roles require strong analytical skills and familiarity with government operations, but they serve different aspects of the policymaking process.

What are some examples of public sector jobs?

Public sector jobs include roles such as government economists, policy analysts, public finance managers, and budget analysts. These positions often require knowledge of economics, public policy, and government regulations, and may involve working in government agencies, local authorities, or public institutions.

Job description

We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.

 ABOUT THE TEAM

SAP's Industry Business Unit for Public Sector is a global team working with governments to transform how they budget, procure, manage, and deliver public services. We help public administrations move from fragmented, reactive processes to proactive, citizen-centric services powered by cloud technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Working across customers, partners, and SAP product teams, we shape how governments adopt innovation while influencing the future of SAP solutions for the public sector.

 THE ROLE

As an SAP iXp Intern, you will help shape how our team engages customers, partners, and the wider government technology community. You will contribute to initiatives that connect innovation, customer needs, and business outcomes while gaining hands-on experience in one of SAP's most strategic industries.

You will support:

  • Creating thought leadership content, customer-facing materials, and industry insights that position SAP as a trusted advisor in government innovation.

  • Translating complex topics—including digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and public service modernization—into compelling narratives for customers and internal stakeholders.

  • Building and enhancing prototypes, demonstrations, and proof-of-concepts using SAP technologies to support customer engagements, innovation workshops, and industry events.

  • Researching how governments worldwide are adopting AI and digital public services, identifying trends, and transforming findings into actionable recommendations.

  • Preparing presentations, supporting executive communications, and assisting with workshops, customer meetings, and industry events.

  • Supporting the validation, development, and scaling of AI use cases for government customers.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to combine technology, business, and public sector innovation while working with experienced professionals in a highly international environment.

 ROLE REQUIREMENTS Must Have
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Data Science, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, Business, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 12 months remaining until graduation at the start of the internship.

  • Strong emphasis on candidates with a background in software development, computer systems, coding, or AI who also demonstrate business acumen and an interest in solving real-world public sector challenges.

  • Curiosity, analytical thinking, and a strong interest in government, digital transformation, innovation, or emerging technologies.

  • Ability to research complex topics, identify trends, and communicate insights clearly to both customer and internal audiences.

  • Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Self-motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented, and eager to learn.

  • Fluent English (mandatory).

  • Spanish is strongly preferred and will be beneficial as part of a global team.

 Nice to Have
  • Experience with Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, AI, data analytics, or cloud technologies.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and willingness to learn SAP technologies and tools.

  • Coursework or experience related to digital transformation, AI, public sector innovation, consulting, or international studies.

  • Experience building prototypes, demos, or digital solutions through academic or personal projects.

 WHERE YOU'LL BELONG

You will join a high-impact, customer-facing Public Sector team operating at the intersection of industry advisory, emerging technologies, Artificial Intelligence, and business development.

Working alongside experienced professionals and directly supporting government customers, you will gain first-hand exposure to enterprise software, customer engagement, solution design, and innovation strategy. You will work with SAP's latest technologies—including AI, cloud platforms, and intelligent automation—to build demonstrations and prototypes that help shape how governments adopt digital innovation.

Supported by an experienced manager and an international team, you will develop highly transferable skills in technology consulting, stakeholder engagement, thought leadership, AI innovation, and customer communication.

This is a unique opportunity to combine technical development with strategic business impact while working for one of the world's leading enterprise software companies.
