Job description

POSITION TITLE: English Learner (EL) Tutor REPORTS TO: Director of Federal Programs BEGINNING DATE: Open Until Filled

NATURE OF WORK:

Part time, itinerant position. 18 hours per week. Personal vehicle required. To ensure that children who are Limited English Proficient (LEP), including immigrant children and youth, attain English proficiency, develop high levels of academic attainment in English and meet the same State academic content and student achievement standards of non-LEP children. To assist LEP students to 1) become proficient in the English language 2) participate meaningfully in the content area instruction in the mainstream classroom 3) and graduate from high school.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Two year Associate's Degree in Education preferred
  • Associate's Degree required (must include an emphasis in mathematics, reading, writing and content knowledge)
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA required
  • Teacher licensure recommended
  • Experience working with diverse cultures
  • Experience in English Learners

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:ย  10 months

SALARY:ย $15-$25 per hour, depending on teacher licensure

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Push into classrooms, model instructional strategies and assist with instructional needs.
  2. Assist students in pull out sessions; one on one, in small groups or within the classroom setting aligned with students goals as written in LEP plans.
  3. Assist LEP students through appropriate blended learning approach in order to attain proficiency in the English language.
  4. Assist with LEP Instructional Plans in consultation with the school-based LEP team using WIDA standards and Can Do Descriptors (principal/designee, classroom teacher(s), Building Level Test Coordinator, tutor).
  5. Maintain records of student progress in Office 365.
  6. Maintain current and accurate records in Ellevation, third party software.
  7. Maintain accurate and up to date records for each LEP student at each assigned school.ย  ย 
  8. Communicate with school personnel and maintain up to date roster of all LEP students at each assigned school; must submit withdrawal information to the EL office within 5 days of LEP withdrawal/transfer.
  9. Set high standards for student performance and achievement.
  10. Establish positive rapport with students, parents, all school personnel and stakeholders
  11. Adhere to established laws, rules and regulations of the Onslow County School system and the EL program.
  12. Attend Professional Development offerings.
  13. Complete other duties as assigned by the Director of Federal Programs

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to stand, sit, or walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms routinely.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, carry, push, or pull.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds routinely and 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to visually, auditorily, and physically monitor student performance and conduct.
  • Must be able to drive to variety of school sites.
