What is a PSN?

PSNs, or Psychiatric Social Nurses, are professionals who combine nursing skills with social work expertise to provide comprehensive mental health care. They assess, diagnose, and treat patients with psychiatric conditions, often working as part of a multidisciplinary team. PSNs support individuals and families by offering counseling, coordinating care, and connecting clients with community resources. Their role is crucial in helping patients manage mental health challenges and improve their overall well-being.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a psychiatric nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Psychiatric Nurse, you need a strong background in psychiatric nursing principles, mental health assessment, and crisis intervention, usually supported by an RN license and specialized mental health training. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), psychiatric assessment tools, and medication administration systems is essential. Compassion, emotional resilience, and effective communication are critical soft skills for building trust with patients and collaborating with mental health teams. These skills and qualifications are vital for delivering safe, empathetic, and effective care to individuals with mental health needs.

What are some common challenges faced by PSNs at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and how can new employees best prepare for them?

PSNS employees often work in a highly regulated, safety-focused environment that involves strict adherence to protocols and procedures. Newcomers may find the initial learning curve steep, particularly when adapting to the unique tools, documentation standards, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Building strong communication skills, being proactive in safety training, and seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues can help new hires acclimate more smoothly.
