The Role:
Our Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) team within GM's Software and Services organization is responsible for developing, deploying, and releasing control software and calibrations that truly control the whole vehicle. Be it internal combustion engines, hybridized drive units & transmissions, high voltage batteries, or chassis & thermal management, the exciting challenge of inventing new methods to control the world's best mechatronic systems is never ending.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team of engineers responsible for translating new chassis controls strategies, algorithms, and features from simulation and development environments into Engineering Development Vehicles (EDVs) for rapid prototyping, vehicle integration, and real-world demonstration.
  • Drive execution of a critical development phase that enables tangible, vehicle-based validation of new chassis controls technologies, increasing confidence in feature performance, system maturity, and readiness for broader program application.
  • Oversee the implementation of both next-generation control strategies and enhanced high-performance applications of existing features, ensuring rapid prototype vehicles effectively showcase the breadth and depth of chassis controls capabilities.
  • Guide the team in developing and maintaining demonstration and evaluation vehicles that serve as strategic technology showcase platforms for program teams, performance teams, and senior leadership, helping communicate technical capability, development progress, and future potential.
  • Provide leadership for the planning, utilization, and stewardship of the chassis controls test vehicle fleet, including EDVs as well as production calibration and validation vehicles that support the broader organization's development activities.
  • Establish robust processes for fleet management, vehicle readiness, coordination, and prioritization to ensure test assets are available, properly configured, and aligned with evolving engineering and program needs.
  • Lead the team's responsibility for identifying, coordinating, and improving test environments and proving ground capabilitiesrequired to support chassis controls development across multiple operating conditions and use cases.
  • Oversee testing activities at Milford Proving Grounds and GM's Winter Test Facility in Kincheloe, Michigan, ensuring facilities, infrastructure, and test support capabilities meet the demands of advanced chassis controls development and validation.
  • Identify and drive opportunities to improve GM test facilities to meet industry-leading standards for chassis controls testing, with a particular focus on enabling effective winter testing, rapid learning cycles, and high-quality data collection.
  • Assess and recommend additional external test facilities and proving grounds when GM-owned sites do not fully meet development requirements, expanding the organization's ability to validate emerging controls technologies efficiently and effectively.
  • Work cross-functionally with controls development, calibration, validation, vehicle integration, program, and leadership teams to align prototype vehicle builds and test strategies with broader business and engineering priorities.
  • Deliver technical and organizational leadership that strengthens GM's ability to rapidly develop, validate, demonstrate, and scale industry-leading chassis controls technologies that elevate vehicle performance and the customer driving experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional engineering/technical experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience related to embedded control system, calibration, related hardware, and/or safety critical system development
  • Demonstrated background in chassis controls vehicle fleet and test facility management
  • Demonstrated results in successful project execution
  • Excellent multi-functional communication and leadership skills - able to get multiple teams moving in the same direction
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity while driving timely decision making
  • Possess a valid driver's license and the ability to operate test vehicles

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in chassis controls development
  • Leadership experience developing or utilizing industry standards
  • Leadership experience in safety compliance of embedded systems
  • Leadership of teams of engineers responsible for developing or testing embedded control systems or related hardware in an agile environment
  • Demonstrated ability to: achieve results through effective teamwork, lead numerous projects with different focal areas to successful completion, and manage and measure work through metrics, data, and results
  • Experience managing a global team that is geographically dispersed
  • Working knowledge of embedded controls development tool set - (e.g. IBM Rational Tool Suite, Jira/Jama, Git ecosystem, MATLAB-Simulink, ETAS)
