What does a Propulsion Test Engineer do?

A Propulsion Test Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, and analyzing tests of propulsion systems, such as rocket engines, jet engines, or other propulsion components. They design test setups, ensure safety protocols are followed, and collect data to evaluate performance and reliability. Their work involves collaborating with design, manufacturing, and operations teams to validate system functionality and improve designs. They also troubleshoot issues and recommend improvements based on test results. This role requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and hands-on experience with testing procedures and equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Propulsion Test Engineer position, and why are they important?

A successful Propulsion Test Engineer typically holds a degree in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering and possesses strong analytical, troubleshooting, and hands-on technical skills. Familiarity with propulsion system instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and test software (such as LabVIEW or MATLAB), along with certifications like Six Sigma or relevant safety training, are often required. Outstanding attention to detail, communication, and teamwork skills enable effective coordination across multidisciplinary teams. These capabilities are essential to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient propulsion system testing and development in high-stakes engineering environments.

What does a typical day look like for a Propulsion Test Engineer?

As a Propulsion Test Engineer, your day usually begins with preparing and calibrating test equipment, collaborating with engineers and technicians to review test plans, and ensuring all safety protocols are in place. During tests, you'll monitor propulsion systems, collect data, and troubleshoot any technical issues that arise. After testing, you'll analyze data, present findings to project teams, and document results to support further development. The position involves a balance of hands-on work in test facilities and desk-based analysis, often requiring close collaboration with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams.

Job description

Hermeus is a venture-backed defense aviation company reclaiming the lost art of rapid iterative prototyping to build the fastest aircraft in the world today. By prioritizing relentless hardware iteration, we deliver high-speed systems at the pace of the modern battlefield. We work with the Department of War to provide the high-speed capabilities our nation and its allies need to maintain a durable, asymmetric advantage.

About this Role:
As a Senior Propulsion Test Engineer, you will support the development, integration, and operation of propulsion test systems at our Florida facility. This is a hands-on, high-impact role focused on building test capabilities and executing test campaigns for next-generation hypersonic propulsion systems.ย
ย
You will work closely with engineers and technicians across multiple disciplines to design test hardware, operate complex test facilities, and ensure safe, reliable, and repeatable performance. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys building, troubleshooting, and operating large-scale test systems and wants to be directly involved in advancing high-Mach technology.ย
Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain propulsion test stands and associated infrastructure, including mechanical systems, fluid systems, and instrumentation.ย
  • Execute propulsion and subsystem test operations, including planning, integration, checkouts, and post-test analysis.ย
  • Support the maintenance of existing test equipment, data acquisition systems, and control hardware.ย
  • Generate and review detailed test plans, procedures, and safety documentation.ย
  • Collaborate with propulsion, GNC, software, and vehicle systems engineers to support test article integration and operation.ย
  • Analyze test data to validate performance, identify anomalies, and recommend design or procedural improvements.ย
  • Participate in system readiness reviews, safety walkdowns, and test preparation activities.ย
  • Work with technicians to install hardware, route fluid lines, connect instrumentation, and configure control systems.ย
  • Support root-cause investigations and corrective actions when test failures or anomalies occur.ย
  • Drive continuous improvements in test operations, safety, and reliability processes.ย
Requirements:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or a related Engineering discipline.ย
  • 7+ years of experience in propulsion test, mechanical systems, or fluid systems design and operation.ย
  • Hands-on experience working with high-pressure, cryogenic, or high-temperature fluid systems.ย
  • Proficiency in reading and creating P&IDs and mechanical drawingsย
  • Experience with data acquisition and control systems.ย
  • Strong understanding of system safety practices and operational discipline in hazardous test environments.ย
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.ย
  • Effective communicator who can work independently within a fast-paced, cross-functional team.ย
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and ability to work extended hours or weekends as required by test schedules.ย
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.ย
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Masterโ€™s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or related field.ย
  • Experience with air-breathing or rocket propulsion systems (turbomachinery, ramjet, scramjet, or hybrid systems).ย
  • Familiarity with ASME B31.3, ASME BPVC Section VIII, and pressure vessel/facility standards.ย
  • Experience with command and control systems, PLCs, and test automation.ย
  • Background in instrumentation calibration, dynamic data collection, and signal processing.ย
