Job description

Senior Trading Desk Operations Engineer

The position duties are as follows: Responsible for understanding the trading desk's operational workflows, designing and maintaining technological infrastructure and automated solutions to improve these systems, and coordinating with internal and external parties to ensure accurate trade booking, monitoring, and resolution of operational issues. Day-to-day job duties include: 

  • Work closely with Traders, using discretion to identify relevant market information, independently monitor the proper functioning of proprietary trading systems, maintain complex spreadsheets and databases that are crucial to real time pricing, interpret and present large datasets, develop new workflows in collaboration with trading desk heads for new trading strategies, and identify and build tools or processes that improve the firm's ability to trade financial instruments across global markets; 
  • Leverage deep knowledge of Ocaml, Python, PostgreSQL, Bash, Unix, Excel, VBA, and internal development systems to identify inefficiencies in and create quantitative tools to improve the firm's technological infrastructure, and liaise with internal tech teams to ensure collaborative progress on larger technological projects; 
  • Monitor and actively improve the trading desk's operational efficiency by supporting the facilitation of many different kinds of trades and orders, owning certain procedural workflows such as making sure transactions are booked correctly and settled, managing communications with internal groups such as Operations, Post-trade, Compliance, Finance and Margin, P&L, Reconciliation, various tech teams, and other trading desks, evaluating interactions with external groups such as Prime Brokers, Clearing Firms and trading counterparties with an eye towards identifying and rectifying operational inefficiencies, and proposing general improvements to operational methodology; and 
  • Train Junior TDOEs on the trading desk's operational structure, technological infrastructure and culture, and participate in recruiting. 

The position requires a 3 or 4 year Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Quantitative Finance, Computer Science or a closely related quantitative field or foreign equivalent plus two (2) years of experience as a Trading Desk Operations Specialist, Trading Desk Operations Engineer, or related position at a quantitative trading firm. Experience must include:

  • 2 years of experience applying knowledge of trading desk activities including operational issues and booking and reporting of trades, monitoring trade settlement, locating stock loans, instructing creations and redemptions of ETF units, and reconciling positions between the firm and external parties; 
  • 2 years of experience developing software using OCaml, including utilizing algebraic data types and pattern matching; applying functional programming principles; implementing concurrent operations; understanding async and deferred; and utilizing RPCs for server/client communications;
  • 2 years of experience collecting market information to pass through to Traders, and monitoring technology systems that facilitate trading of financial instruments across global markets;
  • Series 7, Series 57, and Series SIE licenses required;
  • All technical requirements for this role may be subject to employer conducted testing to assess minimum proficiency.

Part time telecommuting may be permitted with manager approval.
