What is a prop firm?

Prop firms, short for proprietary trading firms, are companies that use their own capital to trade financial instruments like stocks, currencies, or futures. Rather than managing client funds, they hire or fund traders to execute trades on behalf of the firm. Profits are shared between the trader and the firm, often based on performance. Many prop firms offer training, mentorship, and access to advanced trading platforms. They provide an opportunity for skilled traders to trade larger amounts of capital than they might personally have available.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a proprietary trader at a prop firm?

To thrive as a Proprietary Trader at a prop firm, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of financial markets, and often a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Proficiency with trading platforms, charting software, and risk management systems is typically required, along with relevant certifications like FINRA Series 7 in some jurisdictions. Outstanding decision-making, discipline, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These capabilities are vital as they enable traders to manage risk, capitalize on market opportunities, and maintain consistent profitability in a highly competitive environment.

What are some common challenges traders face when working at a proprietary trading firm?

Traders at prop firms often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent profitability under pressure, adapting to rapidly changing market conditions, and managing risk within the firm's parameters. Collaboration with other traders and risk managers is key, as sharing strategies and market insights can improve performance, but competition among peers may also be intense. Additionally, traders must continually learn and adapt to new trading tools and technologies to stay competitive within the firm.

How to get hired by a prop firm?

To get hired by a prop firm, candidates typically need to demonstrate strong trading skills, risk management, and a proven track record through trading simulations or assessments. Many firms require passing a trading evaluation or challenge before offering a trading position, and relevant knowledge of trading platforms and strategies is beneficial.

Job description

Savoia Investments Sub-Advisory Manager, Volare Research Boreas Fund LP
Separately managed account under our fund. This is an allocation, not a funded account.
Read this first
If you have not traded live with real money and cannot produce a broker-verifiable track record, this is not for you. Do not apply. Backtests, paper accounts, simulated results, and prop firm evaluation records do not count and will not be reviewed.
We are also not hiring quant researchers, quant developers, or portfolio allocation quants. We are not looking for someone to build models for us, run factor research, or manage an allocation framework. We are looking for traders who run their own systematic models live, with their own edge, and have the record to prove it works.
If that is you, keep reading.
Who we are
We are a volatility-focused systematic fund. We allocate our own capital to independent quant traders who have proven a strategy live but have not scaled it.
To be direct about what this is not. We are not a proprietary trading firm. There is no challenge, no evaluation, no fee, and nothing for you to buy. We do not make money when you fail. We make money when the strategies we allocate to produce returns, which means our incentive and yours are the same one.
Structure
Separately managed account under the fund, with limited trading authorization. Your strategy, our capital, our infrastructure.
Initial allocation is sized to your strategy's demonstrated capacity, not to a fixed number. We size to what the strategy can absorb without degrading.
Capital scales with performance and risk discipline. There is no ceiling. Managers who hold their limits and produce move up in size on a defined review schedule, and the constraint on how far that goes is your strategy's capacity, not our balance sheet.
Payout as a percentage of P&L. No salary, no cap on the upside.
Your strategy remains yours. We do not take ownership of your IP.
Fully remote.
What we trade
We are deliberately narrow. Our infrastructure, risk systems, and prime brokerage are built for US listed markets, and we allocate only to strategies that run inside them.
In scope:
  • US listed equities
  • US listed equity and index options
  • US listed futures

Not in scope right now:
  • Crypto, spot or derivatives
  • FX
  • Fixed income and credit
  • OTC or non-US listed instruments
  • Multi-asset or mixed-book strategies that span more than one of the categories above

If your track record mixes asset classes, we can only evaluate the portion that runs in the instruments listed above, and only if that portion has its own standalone verifiable record. A blended tearsheet spanning crypto and equities will not be reviewed.
Frequency
Mid and low frequency. Holding periods from intraday-to-close through multi-week.
We do not allocate to HFT, latency-sensitive, or co-location dependent strategies. If your edge depends on execution speed we cannot reproduce on standard institutional infrastructure, it does not fit here.
Minimum requirements
All applicants:
  • Live trading with real capital, monthly returns, broker-verifiable.
  • Max drawdown at or under 15 percent.
  • Live Sharpe at or above 1.0.
  • Gross leverage at or under 2x.
  • Systematic and documented. You can explain the edge, why it exists, and why it persists.

You are the one who built and runs it.
Track record length depends on strategy type:
  • Strategy Minimum live record
  • Market neutral, or SPX correlation under 0.3 12 months
  • Directional 24 months

Market neutral is what we are built for and what we prioritize. Directional strategies are considered by exception, and the bar is higher because the record has to survive more than one regime before it tells us anything. A directional book with 12 good months in a trending market is not evidence. We want to see how it behaved when the trend broke.
Eligibility
Managers must be able to be onboarded to a US separately managed account structure. Placement is subject to KYC and AML screening, sanctions screening, and a jurisdictional review of your tax residency and, where applicable, your trading entity's domicile. Some jurisdictions carry cross-border capital and account restrictions we cannot work around. We will tell you early in the process if that applies to you.
How to apply
Send:
  • Tearsheet with monthly returns.
  • One-page strategy summary.
  • Written confirmation that you will permit third-party broker verification.

Applications without a tearsheet will not be reviewed.
