What is a prop firm?

Prop firms, short for proprietary trading firms, are companies that use their own capital to trade financial instruments like stocks, currencies, or futures. Rather than managing client funds, they hire or fund traders to execute trades on behalf of the firm. Profits are shared between the trader and the firm, often based on performance. Many prop firms offer training, mentorship, and access to advanced trading platforms. They provide an opportunity for skilled traders to trade larger amounts of capital than they might personally have available.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a proprietary trader at a prop firm?

To thrive as a Proprietary Trader at a prop firm, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of financial markets, and often a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Proficiency with trading platforms, charting software, and risk management systems is typically required, along with relevant certifications like FINRA Series 7 in some jurisdictions. Outstanding decision-making, discipline, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These capabilities are vital as they enable traders to manage risk, capitalize on market opportunities, and maintain consistent profitability in a highly competitive environment.

What are some common challenges traders face when working at a proprietary trading firm?

Traders at prop firms often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent profitability under pressure, adapting to rapidly changing market conditions, and managing risk within the firm's parameters. Collaboration with other traders and risk managers is key, as sharing strategies and market insights can improve performance, but competition among peers may also be intense. Additionally, traders must continually learn and adapt to new trading tools and technologies to stay competitive within the firm.

How to get hired by a prop firm?

To get hired by a prop firm, candidates typically need to demonstrate strong trading skills, risk management, and a proven track record through trading simulations or assessments. Many firms require passing a trading evaluation or challenge before offering a trading position, and relevant knowledge of trading platforms and strategies is beneficial.

Job description

Placement Type:

Salary:
$120,000-180,000 Salary
Start Date:
Sep 14, 2026
We are seeking an exceptionally creative Window Designer with a deep Spatial Design background to transform our leading Tech client's flagship storefronts into immersive, narrative-driven visual destinations. While this role lives squarely in the realm of high-impact visual merchandising and window design, it requires a unique 3D spatial perspective-translating physical storefront windows into multi-dimensional, architectural storytelling environments, with a heavy emphasis on high-profile Holiday and Seasonal installations.
If you know how to leverage light, structural depth, scale, and material layering to turn passing pedestrians into captivated audiences, we want to hear from you.
Please Note: This is a Hybrid position which can be based out of San Francisco, CA or New York City. Candidates would need to commute to client offices in either of these locations as needed.
Key Responsibilities
  • Concept & Narrative: Develop compelling seasonal storyboards, visual concepts, and 3D mockups for upcoming holiday visual campaigns and flagship storefront windows.
  • Spatial Window Architecture: Apply 3D spatial design principles (scale, proportion, lighting, sightlines, depth) to maximize the high-impact real estate of storefront window frames.
  • Prototyping & Material Sourcing: Select, source, and test innovative materials, prop elements, kinetic features, lighting setups, and spatial fixtures within budget and structural safety standards.
  • Production & Fabrication Alignment: Collaborate closely with external fabricators, prop makers, print vendors, and local store build teams to oversee construction and ensure designs translate seamlessly from CAD/renderings to physical reality.
  • On-Site Installation: Lead hand-on, on-site setup and installation of complex window environments-often requiring tight turnarounds, precise spatial assembly, and evening or off-hour installations.
  • Seasonal Transition Management: Plan, execute, and decommission rapid seasonal turnarounds (e.g., Holiday, Spring Flagship, Brand Takeovers) without disrupting retail operations.
Qualifications & Skills
  • A portfolio showcasing proven experience in window design, visual merchandising, trade show installations, scenic design, or spatial experience design (Holiday display work highly preferred).
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and rendering software (e.g., SketchUp, Rhino, Blender, or Vectorworks) alongside Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
  • Strong working knowledge of physical scale, sightlines, color theory, retail lighting techniques, and dynamic prop placement.
  • Understanding of spatial fabrication techniques, structural integrity, hanging weight limits, lighting rigs, and sustainable/reusable material choices.
  • Ability to manage production timelines, vendor relationships, and budgetary constraints while delivering pristine artistic output under firm retail deadlines.

Key Performance Attributes
  • Hands-on Craftsmanship: Equal parts big-picture visual strategist and hands-on maker who isn't afraid to adjust lighting or tweak prop placement on location.
  • Trend Awareness: Deep understanding of current spatial design trends, contemporary visual art, visual storytelling, and retail experiential technology.
