Employer & Industry UsageVarious industries including construction, marketingIT, software, technology sectors
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on project management skillsFocus on technical expertise alongside project management

The main difference is that a Project Manager oversees projects broadly across industries, focusing on management skills, while a Technical Project Manager combines project management with technical expertise, often working closely with IT or software development teams. The Technical Project Manager role requires additional technical certifications and a deeper understanding of technical processes, making it suitable for tech-heavy projects.

Is being a TPM a good career?

A Technical Project Manager (TPM) is a valuable role that combines project management skills with technical expertise, often involving managing complex projects in technology environments. It offers opportunities for career growth, skill development in areas like Agile, Scrum, and tools such as Jira or MS Project, and typically provides competitive compensation. The role suits individuals with strong communication, leadership, and technical knowledge who enjoy coordinating teams and delivering technical solutions.

Is an IT project manager the same as a technical project manager?

A technical project manager is a type of project manager who specializes in managing projects that involve complex technical or software development tasks, often requiring technical expertise and familiarity with tools like Agile or Scrum. An IT project manager may oversee a broader range of technology projects, including infrastructure, hardware, and software, but may not always require deep technical knowledge. While the roles can overlap, a technical project manager typically has more hands-on technical skills compared to a general IT project manager.

What is the highest paying project manager?

Senior project managers, especially those in industries like IT, engineering, or construction, tend to have the highest salaries among project management roles. Certifications such as PMP or PgMP, along with extensive experience and managing large-scale projects, can significantly increase earning potential, with top salaries reaching over $150,000 annually in some regions.

What are the 4 types of project managers?

Project managers can be categorized into four main types: functional, project-oriented, matrix, and program managers. Functional managers oversee specific departments, while project managers lead individual projects. Matrix managers work across departments with shared authority, and program managers coordinate related projects to achieve strategic objectives.

How do Technical Project Managers typically balance technical problem-solving with project coordination responsibilities?

Technical Project Managers often juggle both technical and managerial duties, which requires strong prioritization and communication skills. They are responsible for translating business requirements into actionable tasks, troubleshooting technical issues with development teams, and ensuring project milestones are met. Collaboration is key, as they frequently work with software engineers, QA testers, and stakeholders to keep projects on track. Balancing these aspects involves staying organized, delegating technical tasks appropriately, and maintaining open lines of communication with all team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Project Manager, you need a solid understanding of project management methodologies (such as Agile or Waterfall), technical acumen relevant to the industry, and a bachelor’s degree in a related field—often supplemented by certifications like PMP or Scrum Master. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Microsoft Project, and collaboration platforms is critical for planning, tracking, and reporting project progress. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set standout professionals apart by enabling them to bridge the gap between technical teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are vital for delivering projects on time, within scope, and ensuring alignment between business objectives and technical solutions.

Job description

Why join Giga
  • The Pace: We're building at a speed most companies talk about but never actually operate at. If you've been bored somewhere else, you won't be here.
  • The Impact: Every person at Giga touches the work that matters. No layers, no waiting for approval chains. You'll see your fingerprints on what we ship.
  • The Team: A team of operators defining the future of AI infrastructure. We recruit A-players from the most innovative companies in the world, and they choose Giga because the work here means more.
  • The Moment: AI doesn't run without power, and that's us. Giga is the picks and shovels behind the AI revolution. This industry is about to explode, and you'll be in the room where it's already happening.

What you'll do
As Technical Project Manager at Giga, you'll own the day-to-day execution of one or more data center projects from design kickoff through construction close-out. You're the person who keeps every ball in the air tracking submittals, chasing RFIs, coordinating A&E vendors, and making sure the schedule reflects reality. You'll work directly under a Technical Program Manager and have clear ownership of your projects while operating inside a larger program structure. This is a role for someone who's done the work before and wants to do it faster, at higher stakes, on infrastructure that actually matters.
Where you'll work
We are an in-office culture, velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is based at GigaEnergy HQ with regular travel to active construction sites across the US.
That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.
Responsibilities
Design Execution
  • Track and manage design deliverables from Site Feasibility through IFC maintain the project schedule in MS Project or Primavera P6, flag slippage early, and drive recovery.
  • Coordinate across Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, and Architectural disciplines to keep design packages synchronized; surface scope clashes before they reach the field.
  • Manage the RFI and Submittal log during construction; ensure design intent is maintained through to energization.
  • Maintain drawing registers, document logs, and version control in Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) per GigaEnergy Document Management SOP.

Vendor & Contractor Coordination
  • Manage day-to-day performance of external consultants, track deliverable schedules, review submittals for completeness, and escalate quality issues.
  • Coordinate with GC and subcontractors on schedule alignment, long-lead procurement status, and site readiness milestones.
  • Support SOW and RFP processes for A&E and specialty vendor engagements under direction of the TPM.

Permitting & Regulatory
  • Support the permitting process, prepare and track permit submittal packages, coordinate AHJ comment responses, and maintain the permit log across active jurisdictions.
  • Interface with utility providers and planning departments to track interconnect and approval timelines.

Reporting & Governance
  • Prepare weekly project status updates, schedule health, open issues, risk flags, and upcoming milestones.
  • Maintain action item logs, decision registers, and meeting notes for all project coordination touchpoints.
  • Participate in and support program-level governance cadences established by the TPM.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management.
  • 3-5 years of experience in project management or design coordination within data centers, high-tech manufacturing, or industrial construction.
  • Able to read and interpret construction drawings, architectural floor plans, one-lines, and mechanical schematics.
  • Proficiency in MS Project or Smartsheet, Bluebeam Revu, and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC / Build).
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple open loops simultaneously.
  • Strong communicator written and verbal with the ability to drive action across teams you don't directly manage.
Bonus points
  • Familiarity with Primavera P6 for schedule development and analysis.
  • Experience managing A&E vendor submittals and RFI logs during active construction.
  • Exposure to AHJ permitting environments.
  • Understanding of GigaEnergy's modular component architecture GigaPod, generator modules, chiller modules, and critical power interconnects.
  • PMP certification or actively pursuing it.
Benefits
  • Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Parental leave
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Commuter benefits
  • Monthly team onsites where all offices come in-person to collaborate
