What is the difference between Project Manager Technical Project Manager vs Project Manager?

AspectProject ManagerTechnical Project Manager
CredentialsPM certifications (PMP, CAPM)PM certifications + technical certifications (e.g., Scrum, Agile)
Work EnvironmentGeneral project oversight across industriesTechnical teams, software development, IT projects
Employer & Industry UsageVarious industries including construction, marketingIT, software, technology sectors
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on project management skillsFocus on technical expertise alongside project management

The main difference is that a Project Manager oversees projects broadly across industries, focusing on management skills, while a Technical Project Manager combines project management with technical expertise, often working closely with IT or software development teams. The Technical Project Manager role requires additional technical certifications and a deeper understanding of technical processes, making it suitable for tech-heavy projects.

How do Technical Project Managers typically balance technical problem-solving with project coordination responsibilities?

Technical Project Managers often juggle both technical and managerial duties, which requires strong prioritization and communication skills. They are responsible for translating business requirements into actionable tasks, troubleshooting technical issues with development teams, and ensuring project milestones are met. Collaboration is key, as they frequently work with software engineers, QA testers, and stakeholders to keep projects on track. Balancing these aspects involves staying organized, delegating technical tasks appropriately, and maintaining open lines of communication with all team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Project Manager, you need a solid understanding of project management methodologies (such as Agile or Waterfall), technical acumen relevant to the industry, and a bachelor’s degree in a related field—often supplemented by certifications like PMP or Scrum Master. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Microsoft Project, and collaboration platforms is critical for planning, tracking, and reporting project progress. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set standout professionals apart by enabling them to bridge the gap between technical teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are vital for delivering projects on time, within scope, and ensuring alignment between business objectives and technical solutions.

Discover your exciting role

The Project Manager will lead cross functional programs involving slurry chemical systems, wet bench equipment, and related semiconductor manufacturing processes. This role is responsible for driving project execution from concept through qualification, ensuring alignment with customer requirements, factory readiness, safety standards, and cost and schedule objectives. The ideal candidate has deep exposure to semiconductor wet processes, chemical delivery systems, equipment integration, and fab level operational constraints.

Explore your tasks and responsibilities

Project Leadership & Execution
Lead end to end project management for slurry chemical systems, wet benches, and wet process equipment deployments.
Develop project charters, timelines, budgets, and risk mitigation plans.
Coordinate internal engineering, supply chain, chemical safety, facilities, and external OEM/vendor teams to ensure on time project delivery.
Drive equipment procurement, system configuration reviews, FAT/SAT processes, and tool installation readiness.
Oversee factory acceptance, site installation, commissioning, and qualification phases.
Technical & Process Support
Act as the primary technical liaison between customers, process engineers, and OEM partners for all slurry, chemical delivery, and wet bench-related scopes.
Review and interpret process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), chemical compatibility data, equipment specifications, and safety documentation.
Support root cause analysis and troubleshooting for chemical flow, filtration, recirculation, mixing, metrology, and wet process control issues.
Ensure system performance meets process parameters for cleaning, etching, CMP slurry distribution, and contamination control.
Stakeholder Management (Internal and External)
Facilitate communication across engineering, EH&S, procurement, facilities, operations, and quality teams.
Manage customer expectations, support technical presentations, and provide regular project status updates.
Work closely with vendor partners (wet bench OEMs, chemical suppliers, tool installers) to resolve technical and logistical challenges.
Compliance, Safety & Quality
Ensure all project activities comply with semiconductor fab safety protocols, chemical handling guidelines, and environmental regulations.
Validate that wet bench and slurry systems meet UL, SEMI, FM, and internal fab standards.
Manage documentation: change notices, deviation reports, system turnover packages, SOPs, and qualification documentation.
Support continuous improvement and robust quality practices across equipment and chemical process integration.
Budgeting & Cost Control
Develop and manage capital and operational budgets for wet bench equipment, slurry distribution systems, facilities modifications, and contractor support.
Monitor spend, forecast cost-to-complete, and negotiate vendor contracts to maintain budget integrity.
Other duties as assigned
