Can a project manager become a Scrum Master?

Yes, a project manager can become a Scrum Master by gaining knowledge of Agile principles, Scrum frameworks, and relevant certifications such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM). Transitioning often involves shifting from traditional project management to facilitating Agile teams and adopting a servant-leader role.

What does a Scrum Master do in project management?

A Scrum Master facilitates Agile project management by guiding teams through Scrum practices, removing obstacles, and ensuring adherence to the Scrum framework. They coordinate sprints, conduct daily stand-ups, and support continuous improvement using tools like Jira or Trello. The role requires strong communication, leadership, and knowledge of Agile principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Manager Scrum Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, project management principles, and a relevant certification such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or PMI-ACP. Project Manager Scrum Masters often juggle the dual responsibilities of guiding scrum teams through agile ceremonies and ensuring stakeholders are informed and aligned on project progress. This involves frequent communication, transparent reporting, and effective backlog management to prioritize work that delivers business value. They typically set clear expectations with stakeholders about agile timelines and adapt plans as needed based on team velocity and feedback. Success in this role requires both strong facilitation skills and the ability to navigate competing priorities in a collaborative environment.

Their goal is to ensure that projects are completed on time and within scope, while also supporting Agile best practices and continuous improvement within the team.

Is AI replacing Scrum Master?

AI is not replacing Scrum Masters, but it can assist in project management tasks such as tracking progress, automating routine updates, and analyzing data. Scrum Masters focus on facilitating team collaboration, removing impediments, and coaching Agile practices, which require human judgment and interpersonal skills that AI cannot replicate. AI tools are seen as complementary to the Scrum Master role rather than a replacement.

Summary:

Messerli Kramer, a trusted Twin Cities law firm since 1965, is looking for a full-time, Project Manager/Scrum Master to join our team in Plymouth, MN to help bring structure, visibility, and execution discipline to a fast-paced Data Operations environment. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in high-volume, dynamic environments and enjoys building order out of complexity. You’ll play a key role in improving how work is planned, prioritized, and delivered—ensuring both project initiatives and day-to-day operational workflow efficiently through Agile processes.

This role is critical to improving how work gets done. You’ll help:

  • Bring structure and consistency to how projects and requests are managed

  • Create clear visibility into all work across the team
  • Enable better planning, faster delivery, and stronger outcomes

Essential Functions and Duties:

Drive Project Execution

  • Lead projects end-to-end—from intake and planning through delivery
  • Define scope, timelines, and resource needs across multiple concurrent initiatives
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and successful delivery

Lead Agile / Scrum Practices

  • Serve as Scrum Master for the team, facilitating:
    • Sprint planning
    • Daily stand-ups
    • Backlog grooming
    • Sprint reviews and retrospectives
  • Ensure all work (projects, tickets, and operational support) is captured, prioritized, and executed within sprints
  • Drive a culture of accountability and consistent sprint completion

Improve Work Intake & Prioritization

  • Establish and maintain a structured intake process for incoming requests
  • Bring clarity and consistency to prioritization decisions
  • Reduce workflow disruptions by ensuring work is properly evaluated before execution

Increase Visibility & Efficiency

  • Ensure all work is tracked and visible in one system, reducing “hidden” or ad hoc work
  • Improve visibility into operational tasks, production support, and project efforts
  • Identify and eliminate inefficiencies and manual processes

Reporting & Insights

  • Track and report on:
    • Sprint performance
    • Backlog health and ticket aging
    • Team capacity vs. demand
  • Provide leadership with clear, actionable insights to support decision-making

Collaborate Across the Business

  • Act as a key liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams
  • Help ensure Data Operations is engaged early in new initiatives and requests
  • Promote a structured, scalable approach to managing work across the organization

Benefits & Perks Include:

  • Medical, Dental, & Vision Insurance
  • HSA & FSA Accounts
  • 401K, with 4% company contribution (after 1 year of service)
  • Paid time off (17 days per year)
  • Paid holidays off (7 days per year + a floating holiday)
  • Company Paid Life Insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Building amenities include: Free parking, onsite restaurant, & onsite free gym
Requirements:

Required Education & Experience & Competencies:

  • 3–6 years of experience in Project Management and Agile delivery
  • Hands-on experience serving as a Scrum Master in Agile environments
  • Experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar

Preferred:

  • Scrum certification (CSM, PMI-ACP, or similar)
  • Experience in Data Operations, IT, or technical teams
  • Background improving processes, workflows, or operational efficiency
  • Experience working in environments with both project-based and support-driven work
