What is a project manager internship?

A Project Manager Internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in managing projects within an organization. Interns typically assist with project planning, coordination, and communication between team members and stakeholders. This role helps interns learn essential project management skills, such as time management, resource allocation, and problem-solving. The experience gained often serves as a foundation for a future career in project management or related fields.

What are the qualifications to get a project manager internship?

The qualifications to get a project manager internship depend on your level of responsibilities and your education. To qualify for a project management internship, you should be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited university or college and studying the field in which you are applying to intern. For example, if you want to intern as a project manager in software development, you should be studying computer science or engineering. Typically, you also need to have recommendations from professors or other professional sources. Strong attention to detail and good technical skills are essential for project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager Intern, you need foundational knowledge of project management principles, strong organizational abilities, and preferably working toward or holding a degree in business, management, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software like Microsoft Project, Trello, or Asana, and basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite are commonly expected. Excellent communication, teamwork, and time-management skills help you effectively support projects and adapt to dynamic environments. These skills are crucial for successfully coordinating tasks, supporting project goals, and developing into a capable project manager.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect to handle during a project manager internship?

As a Project Manager Intern, you'll typically assist with coordinating project tasks, tracking timelines, and communicating with team members across departments. You may participate in meetings, help prepare project documentation, and support senior project managers with reporting and risk management. This experience provides insight into the full project lifecycle and helps you develop organizational and leadership skills while working in a collaborative environment. Interns often get to shadow experienced professionals, allowing for hands-on learning and professional growth.

What is the difference between Project Manager Internship vs Project Coordinator?

AspectProject Manager InternshipProject Coordinator
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in related fieldOften similar, may require some experience or certification
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, learning-focused, entry-levelEntry-level professional role, supporting project teams
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in various industries, especially in tech, construction, and marketingCommon across industries, often a stepping stone to project management roles

The Project Manager Internship is an entry-level, learning-focused role for students or recent graduates, providing exposure to project management tasks. The Project Coordinator is a similar entry-level position but may require some prior experience and involves supporting project execution. Both roles are common in many industries and serve as stepping stones toward full project management careers.

Can an intern be a project manager?

A project manager internship typically involves learning project management skills under supervision, and interns usually do not hold full project management responsibilities. While some internships may include leadership tasks or team coordination, the role of a project manager generally requires experience and certification, such as PMP, which interns are unlikely to have. Interns gain valuable experience but are not usually assigned as the primary project manager for complex projects.

What does a project manager internship do?

A project manager internship involves supporting project planning, coordination, and execution by assisting with tasks such as scheduling, communication, and documentation. Interns gain experience in project management tools and methodologies, often working under the supervision of experienced managers to develop organizational and leadership skills.

Build Your Construction Career on Projects That Challenge You.

Superior Rigging & Erecting is seeking an Assistant Project Manager to join our Atlanta team and support the planning and execution of complex crane, rigging, steel erection, and specialty construction projects.

This is an opportunity for an early-career construction professional who wants more than administrative project support. You will work alongside experienced project managers, superintendents, engineers, field leaders, customers, and subcontractors while gaining hands-on exposure to the full project lifecycle.

Since 1952, Superior Rigging & Erecting has built a reputation for taking on difficult work and delivering it safely and successfully. We Make the Tough Look Easy.

What You'll Do

  • Support Project Managers from project startup through closeout.
  • Assist with project schedules, budgets, cost tracking, forecasting, and documentation.
  • Coordinate ย submittals, RFIs, change orders, purchase orders, and project correspondence.
  • Help coordinate materials, equipment, subcontractors, vendors, and field operations.
  • Participate in project meetings and track action items and deliverables.
  • Review drawings, specifications, contracts, and project requirements.
  • Communicate with customers, engineers, superintendents, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • Help identify project risks, schedule impacts, and potential cost issues.
  • Support billing, job-cost reporting, and project closeout activities.
  • Visit jobsites as needed to understand field conditions and support project execution.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, accountability, and customer service.

Requirements

  • ย Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Building Construction, or a related field with at least 1 year of relevant construction experience; or
  • In lieu of a degree, 2+ years of similar and relevant construction experience in project coordination, project engineering, field engineering, estimating, or assistant project management.
  • Internship, co-op, or substantial project/field experience may be considered toward the experience requirement.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working with both office and field teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with construction project management software is a plus.
  • Experience with structural steel, steel erection, crane and rigging, heavy industrial, commercial construction, or specialty contracting is preferred, but not required.
  • Willingness to travel to jobsites as project needs require.

What Makes Someone Successful Here

You do not need to know everything on day one. We are looking for someone who is driven, organized, accountable, willing to learn, and comfortable taking ownership. You should want to understand how projects are actually built-not just how they are managed from behind a desk.

If you want exposure to complex construction, experienced field leaders, and a path toward becoming a Project Manager, we want to talk with you.

Why Superior Rigging & Erecting

At Superior Rigging & Erecting, our work requires planning, teamwork, technical expertise, and disciplined execution. You will have the opportunity to learn from experienced construction professionals while working on projects that build real project management experience.

Ready to build your career? Apply today.
