Project Management Contractor information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Management Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Management Contractor, you need strong project planning, organizational, and leadership skills, typically supported by a bachelor's degree and relevant project management experience. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira, and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are highly valued. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities help you build client trust and guide teams through complex projects. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, client satisfaction, and effective team coordination in dynamic contract environments.

What are Project Management Contractors?

Project Management Contractors are professionals hired on a temporary basis to oversee and manage specific projects within an organization. They are responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects, ensuring that goals are met on time and within budget. Unlike full-time employees, they typically work on contract for the duration of a project and may manage multiple projects for different clients. Their expertise helps organizations complete projects efficiently without the long-term commitment of a permanent hire.

What is the difference between Project Management Contractor vs Project Coordinator?

AspectProject Management ContractorProject Coordinator
CredentialsPM certifications (PMP, CAPM), relevant experienceTypically a bachelor's degree, some certifications (CAPM)
Work EnvironmentContract basis, often freelance or temporary projectsFull-time or part-time in organizations, supporting project teams
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across industries for specific projectsCommonly employed within organizations to assist project managers

While both roles support project execution, a Project Management Contractor is hired temporarily to lead or manage projects independently, often with specialized certifications. A Project Coordinator typically assists project managers by handling administrative tasks and coordinating activities within ongoing projects. The contractor role is more autonomous and results-driven, whereas the coordinator provides essential support within a team environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Project Management Contractors and how can they be effectively addressed?

Project Management Contractors often face the challenge of quickly adapting to new organizational cultures and project teams, as they typically work on a contract basis for diverse clients. Building trust and clear communication with stakeholders in a short time frame is crucial. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear expectations early, maintain transparent documentation, and leverage strong interpersonal skills to integrate smoothly with existing teams. Additionally, staying organized and adaptable helps contractors manage shifting project scopes and timelines effectively.

Job description

Senior Manager - Manufacturing PMO (North America) | Calgary, AB

Shape the Future of Industrial Projects at Scale

At Orica, it's the power of our people that drives progress. Every day, across the globe, we enable essential industries by delivering innovative solutions in mining, infrastructure, and manufacturing.

With over 150 years of industry leadership and 13,000+ employees worldwide, we are transforming how resources are mobilized-through digital innovation, automation, and smarter ways of working.

This is your opportunity to lead high-impact capital projects that directly influence the future of manufacturing across North America.

Why This Role Stands Out

This isn't a traditional PMO role. You will:

Lead a multi-year capital portfolio across critical manufacturing assets
Influence up to $50M+ investment programs in complex, high-hazard environments
Partner with executive leaders, site teams, and global stakeholders while leading teams across Carseland, AB and Winnemucca, NV
Drive project excellence, governance, and operational readiness at scale

Important Information

This role can be based in the Calgary, AB or Centennial, CO area, with leadership responsibility for teams supporting Carseland, AB and Winnemucca, NV.
You will be required to report to the Orica site at least three days a week

What You'll Be Responsible For

As the Senior Manager - Manufacturing PMO (NA), you will translate strategy into execution by ensuring projects are safe, well-governed, and deliver real business value while managing teams across key North American manufacturing locations, including Carseland, AB and Winnemucca, NV.

Portfolio Leadership & Governance
Own and lead the North American manufacturing capital portfolio
Ensure strong alignment between investment priorities, site strategies, and execution plans
Drive stage-gate governance and decision-making discipline

Project Delivery Excellence
Oversee delivery across the full lifecycle: concept execution commissioning handover
Ensure best-in-class project controls (cost, schedule, risk, change)
Intervene early to address risks and underperformance

Strategic Business Partnership
Work directly with site leaders and asset owners to define project success
Balancing operational constraints with growth and compliance requirements
Integrate projects seamlessly into live plant environments

PMO Capability & Continuous Improvement
Elevate PMO maturity across the region through tools, coaching, and standards
Strengthening contractor performance and commercial outcomes
Embed lessons learned and continuous improvement practices

What you will bring

You're a seasoned leader with a strong track record delivering capital projects in complex industrial environments.

Required Experience:
Extensive experience in capital project delivery, portfolio governance, or PMO leadership
Background in chemical manufacturing, mining, energy, or heavy industry
Proven ability to manage brownfield projects within operating plants

Technical Strengths:
Deep expertise in project controls (cost, schedule, risk, change)
Strong understanding of process safety, regulatory compliance, and SHES standards
Commercial acumen in contractor and vendor management

Leadership Profile:
Ability to influence without authority across diverse stakeholders
Comfortable engaging from site floor to executive level
Strategic thinker who translates complexity into clear, actionable decisions

What Success Looks Like

Safe, compliant execution across all projects
Strong delivery performance (scope, cost, schedule)
   High-confidence forecasting and decision-making
Operationally ready assets from day one
Improved PMO capability across North America

Personal Characteristics

Safety-led and values-driven, with visible commitment to disciplined execution in high-hazard environments.
Strategic yet practical, able to connect portfolio decisions to business value and operational realities.
Structured, data-informed and comfortable managing complexity, ambiguity and competing priorities.
Strong ownership mindset with the courage to escalate issues, challenge weak assumptions and drive accountability.
Clear and credible communicator who adapts effectively to frontline, technical and executive audiences.
Collaborative leader who builds trust, coaches others and creates alignment across diverse stakeholders and geographies.
Resilient, decisive and outcome-focused, while maintaining sound judgement under pressure.

Ready to Lead at Scale?

If you're a strategic project leader who thrives in complex environments and wants to drive meaningful impact-we want to hear from you.

What we offer
