What does a project financial controller do?

A Project Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing and managing the financial aspects of specific projects within an organization. They monitor project budgets, track expenses, prepare financial reports, and ensure that projects are delivered within the allocated financial resources. Their role also includes forecasting costs, identifying financial risks, and advising project managers on financial matters to support successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project financial controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Financial Controller, you need a strong background in finance, budgeting, and project accounting, usually supported by a degree in finance or accounting and relevant experience. Familiarity with ERP systems, project management software, and financial reporting tools, as well as certifications like CPA or CMA, are commonly required. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and ensure financial compliance. These skills are vital for accurate financial oversight, risk management, and supporting successful project delivery within budgetary constraints.

How does a project financial controller typically collaborate with project managers and other departments to ensure budget adherence?

A Project Financial Controller works closely with project managers and cross-functional teams to track project expenses, forecast costs, and flag potential budget overruns early. They facilitate regular financial reviews, provide detailed reporting, and offer guidance on cost optimization. Effective communication and collaboration are key, as controllers must translate financial data into actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders, helping the project stay on track and within financial targets.

This position serves as a key finance partner to Operations, Supply Chain, Sales, and executive leadership, supporting margin improvement, liquidity, and disciplined growth. This position reports to the Vice President of Finance.

Key Job Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Close

  • Ensure financial data is accurate, synchronized, and consistently reflected across the general ledger, subledgers, and operational systems by overseeing journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Establish and maintain aligned close processes that ensure internal and external financial reporting is supported by complete, timely, and reliable data across finance and operational workflows.

Accounts Receivable, Credit & DSO Improvement

  • Ensure customer, billing, and collections data is synchronized across ERP, billing, and CRM systems to eliminate discrepancies and delays in cash collection
  • Align AR processes end-to-end-from order entry through invoicing and collections-to support accurate, timely billing and sustained DSO improvement
  • Leverage data visibility and prioritization tools to focus collection efforts based on risk, aging, and cash impact

Accounts Payable, Vendor Management & DPO Optimization

  • Ensure vendor, purchasing, receiving, and invoice data is consistently aligned across systems to support accurate matching, approvals, and payments
  • Align AP workflows with procurement and supply chain processes to ensure invoices reflect agreed pricing, quantities, and terms
  • Optimize DPO through disciplined execution of aligned payment terms while maintaining data integrity and supplier trust
  • Drive standardization and automation to reduce manual intervention and data mismatches across AP processes

Manufacturing & Cost Accounting

  • Ensure inventory, production, and financial data are synchronized across manufacturing systems and the general ledger
  • Align BOMs, routings, labor standards, and overhead rates with financial reporting to ensure accurate product costing and margin visibility
  • Partner with Operations to ensure variance analysis is grounded in consistent, trusted operational and financial data

AI, Automation & Systems Enablement

  • Champion automation and AI solutions that improve data consistency, reduce manual reconciliation, and strengthen process alignment
  • Implement tools that enhance invoice processing, collections prioritization, anomaly detection, and forecasting through better data integration
  • Establish data governance principles that support a single source of truth across finance, operations, and supply chain
  • Use analytics and AI insights to proactively identify data misalignment, operational risks, and improvement opportunities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance operations team
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, priorities, and performance expectations
  • Build a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and cross-functional collaboration

Business Partnership & Decision Support

  • Act as a trusted finance partner to Operations, Supply Chain, Sales, and executive leadership
  • Provide variance analysis, trend analysis, and actionable financial insights
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
  • Assist leadership with ad hoc analysis and strategic decision support

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience
  • Previous managerial experience with direct responsibility for leading, developing, and performance-managing finance or accounting teams
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing or operations-driven environment
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP
  • Knowledge in NetSuite, SAP or JD Edwards is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA, CPA or CMA designation
  • Experience in electronics, industrial manufacturing, or OEM environments

  • Experience implementing automation or AI-enabled finance tools
  • Experience supporting audits and process documentation

Key Competencies & Success Profile

  • Hands-on finance leader with strong ownership mindset
  • Cash-flow and working-capital focused (DSO / DPO driven)
  • Operationally minded and systems-oriented
  • Data-driven with interest in automation and AI
  • Clear communicator and effective cross-functional partner
