To thrive as a Project Engineer Contract, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and a relevant engineering degree, often supplemented by PMP or similar certifications. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and contract administration systems is essential. Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills help you coordinate stakeholders and manage contractual obligations effectively. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the required specifications.

What is a Project Engineer Contract?

A Project Engineer Contract refers to a temporary or fixed-term position where an engineer is hired to oversee and coordinate specific projects, often in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or engineering services. The contract outlines the duration, responsibilities, and expectations for the project engineer, who ensures that project objectives are met on time, within budget, and according to technical standards. Job description

What Vista Does

Vista Projects is an integrated engineering firm who has been solving complex challenges in the energy industry since 1985. We are innovators at our core. We continually find better, smarter ways to design and deliver oil and gas projects, and we are proud to be contributing on some of the most exciting low-carbon and synthetic fuel developments in the North America. For our people, that means meaningful, varied work and a real chance to shape how modern engineering gets done.
We are innovators in the energy industry. We actively find ways to improve how oil and gas projects are designed and delivered, and we are contributing to some remarkable low-carbon and synthetic fuel developments; including electro sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) and gas-to-liquids (GTL) projects. We are headquartered in Calgary and maintain a satellite office in Houston.

Why We Do It

The world needs energy, and better engineering makes the projects that deliver it safer, more efficient and more sustainable. Our multi-discipline teams have designed some of the most challenging and successful projects in the North American energy sector, from early-stage studies and pilots to large-scale commercial expansions. We take pride in doing that work well, and just as much pride in continuously improving how we do it.

What You Would Do in This Role

The Project Engineer will work with various disciplines to ensure all engineering activities are accomplished. Duties will include:

  • Directing and coordinating multi-disciplinary engineering and design teams to deliver project scope
  • Planning, scheduling and estimating design engineering effort on projects to ensure timely issuance of all deliverables
  • Providing status reports and communicating progress, ongoing issues and recommendations with the Project Manager and stake holders
  • Support the Responsible Engineers as required in reviewing and approving designs and vendor drawings to ensure conformity with project specifications, company practices and good engineering practice
  • Supervising complex engineering tasks to execute the project
  • Developing a scope of work for a specific project deliverable (e.g., civil, piping, equipment modules and pipe rack modules among others)
  • Coordinating development of construction work packages (CWP)
  • Coordinating management of change documents (e.g., design change notices, trends, scope changes)
  • Coordinating model reviews and other design reviews
  • Preparing project plans (project execution plan, design basis memorandums, manpower budgets, deliverable lists, schedules) for engineering deliverables
  • Approving all project technical documentation such as specifications, flow diagram, CWPs and plot plans
  • Monitor engineering progress, support earned value reporting, and ensure compliance with control estimate and schedule
  • Ensure adherence to Quality Assurance Quality Control process, standards, instructions, and work procedures
  • Assigning and review work of subcontractor project engineering staff
  • Preparing and update engineering control documents
  • Monitoring design changes and contract extras
  • Generating and maintaining project logs, action lists and tracking sheets
  • Maintaining risk register and coordinate mitigation actions.
  • Participating in schedule review meetings
  • Providing general support for all project management activities
  • Performing other duties as requested
 Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or applied science
  • Ability to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
  • A minimum of four years of experience in engineering and design in related industries
  • Excellent command of the English language (both written and verbal)
  • Self-starter displaying independence and self-direction
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including process, piping, mechanical, civil-structural, electrical, instrumentation and CAD support
 Preferred
  • Experience in at least one major/large-cap project lifecycle
  • Experience in conflict management
  • 8-10 years of experience in engineering and design
  • P.Eng. registration with APEGA
