What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Architect, you need a strong background in architectural design, project management, and building codes, generally supported by a professional architecture degree and state licensure. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM systems, as well as knowledge of construction documentation, is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help Project Architects effectively coordinate with clients, consultants, and construction teams. These skills ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of safety and quality.

How do Project Architects typically balance design creativity with client requirements and project constraints?

Project Architects often navigate the challenge of merging their creative vision with client needs, regulatory guidelines, and budget limitations. This requires effective communication, adaptability, and strategic problem-solving throughout the design and development process. Regular collaboration with clients, engineers, and contractors is essential to ensure that the project remains both innovative and feasible, while also meeting deadlines and quality standards. Successful Project Architects excel at finding practical solutions that honor both the design intent and project demands.

What are Project Architects?

Project Architects are licensed professionals responsible for overseeing the design and execution of building projects from concept through completion. They coordinate with clients, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure the project meets all technical, aesthetic, and regulatory requirements. Project Architects prepare drawings and specifications, manage project timelines and budgets, and resolve any design or construction issues that arise. Their leadership ensures that architectural projects are delivered successfully, on time, and within budget.

Job description

Project Architect

BBB is looking for enthusiastic Project Architects to join our multidisciplinary office in Washington, DC. We operate in various sectors, including multi-family residential, commercial, cultural, institutional, and mixed-use hospitality. Successful candidates will lead and coordinate a team of Architects and Engineers through all phases of design for projects that range from mid-sized to large.

The projects will include residential mixed-use developments, adaptive reuse, cultural institutions, and commercial spaces. Candidates must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to efficiently guide large teams. This role involves effectively coordinating with the Architecture/Engineering (A/E) team on technical, code, and constructability issues, keeping the client informed of all developments, and ensuring deadlines are met.

The Project Architect will be responsible for assembling the necessary documents (Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Documents) with their team. This individual will report directly to the Project Manager and collaborate with the Partner in Charge of the project.

In addition to working locally with a broad and diverse group of professionals at all stages of career development, new hires will collaborate virtually with BBB design professionals in the Boston and Washington DC offices. All BBB employees, including new hires, can participate in staff initiatives that advance professional skills, connect staff beyond project work, and promote environmental and social well-being.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for document production for deliverables, design team coordination, project staffing (with Project Manager), production, and collaboration workflows.
  • Lead a team in the development of a comprehensive set of contract documents, including specifications.
  • Communicate design concepts to the team and client in presentations with visualizations.
  • Guide design direction and establish design goals and priorities with client and Partner input to maintain design intent/integrity throughout the project, using visualizations, physical models, specifications, and construction details.
  • Coordinate and manage consultants and the internal BBB team; execute coordination meetings, communicate directly with the Project Manager, and keep the team focused on the required tasks.
  • Navigate and contribute to the Revit model assembly by guiding the team in the proper direction per our office BIM standards.
  • Direct team in the development of zoning, permit, or other regulatory review packages.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on all project documents for compliance with office standards, client requirements, code, and zoning requirements.
  • Coordinates all trades and agencies related to building design while monitoring drawings.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in general architectural practice, with at least 5 years focused on the residential sector.
  • Experience working on new construction projects is required, and adaptive reuse and existing building experience is a plus.
  • Registered Architect required, and sustainability accreditation preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a team leader while effectively delegating assignments, with prior experience in a comparable position supervising staff.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of multi-family residential technical and code issues in Washington, DC.
  • Proficient in MS Office programs.
  • Ability to anticipate and understand what the most complex, challenging, or critical design or technical problems might be for the project and assign appropriate resources.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and influence the team to meet or exceed goals in a positive manner, providing clear instructions and mentorship as required.

A successful candidate must have the following capabilities when it comes to working with BIM software:

  • Comfortable utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms (Revit experience preferred).
  • Experience participating in a BIM Execution Planning process and adhering to defined standards for model exchange, design authoring, drawing production, and design review within a common data environment (BIM 360 Design preferred).
  • Capable of conducting BIM-based coordination, issue tracking, and quality assurance using a model checking platform (Autodesk Navisworks, Revizto, Solibri Model Checker, and/or BIM 360 Coordinate preferred).
  • Experience successfully producing BIM that is compliant with data requirements and Level of Development (LOD) expectations for a project.

Compensation

BBB offers fair and equitable pay. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is $90,000-$125,000, with variations based on experience, education, achievements, and business needs. Employees may also receive an annual performance-based bonus and salary increase.
