What is a construction project architect?

Construction project architects are licensed professionals who plan, design, and oversee the construction of buildings and structures. They work closely with clients, engineers, and contractors to ensure that projects meet functional, aesthetic, and safety requirements. Their responsibilities include creating detailed blueprints, selecting materials, managing project timelines, and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations. Throughout the construction process, they coordinate various aspects to bring a project from concept to completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a construction project architect?

To thrive as a Construction Project Architect, you need a strong background in architectural design, construction methods, and building codes, usually supported by a professional architecture degree and licensure (e.g., AIA, NCARB certification). Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and project management tools like BIM is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage client relationships. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations, while meeting clients’ expectations.

What is the difference between Construction Project Architect vs Construction Manager?

AspectConstruction Project ArchitectConstruction Manager

Work EnvironmentDesign firms, architectural offices, project sites during constructionConstruction sites, project offices, client meetings
Industry UsageDesign and planning phase, overseeing architectural complianceConstruction phase, managing schedules, budgets, and on-site activities

The Construction Project Architect primarily focuses on design, planning, and ensuring architectural standards are met during construction. In contrast, the Construction Manager oversees the entire construction process, managing schedules, budgets, and on-site operations. Both roles collaborate closely but have distinct responsibilities within the building project lifecycle.

What is the role of a construction project architect in a construction project?

A construction project architect is responsible for designing building plans, ensuring they meet client needs and building codes, and coordinating with engineers and contractors throughout the construction process. They often use design software like AutoCAD and oversee project development from concept to completion to ensure architectural integrity and compliance.

How does a construction project architect typically collaborate with contractors and engineers during a project's construction phase?

A Construction Project Architect plays a central role in coordinating with contractors and engineers throughout the construction phase to ensure that the project is built according to design specifications and regulatory standards. They attend regular site meetings, review shop drawings and submittals, and address any design-related questions or issues that arise on-site. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the architect must balance design intent, technical feasibility, and project timelines while facilitating collaboration among all stakeholders. This collaborative approach helps to minimize costly errors, maintain project quality, and ensure that construction progresses smoothly.

This position will help manage and enforce construction contract requirements across multiple projects to ensure work is completed in line with the contract documents, schedule, quality expectations, and design intent.

Why This Role Stands Out

This is a strong opportunity for someone who enjoys being in the field, solving problems, coordinating with contractors and consultants, and helping projects move from construction through closeout.

You will play a key role in site observations, contractor communication, OAC meetings, RFIs, ASIs, submittals, change orders, inspections, warranty items, and quality control.

Benefits may include:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Strong benefits package
  • Professional growth opportunities
  • Collaborative team environment
  • Field and office involvement
  • Exposure to commercial, K-12, and higher education projects
  • Opportunity to support quality control and mentor developing team members

What You’ll Do

As a Construction Project Architect, you will help oversee the construction phase of multiple projects and serve as a key point of coordination between the owner, contractor, consultants, and internal project team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Visit job sites regularly to review construction progress
  • Observe work for general conformance with contract documents
  • Walk sites with contractors to review schedule, progress, and quality
  • Create field observation reports using online project management software
  • Respond to contractor questions and relay key information to the project team
  • Identify and document items that may impact design intent
  • Review and process RFIs, ASIs, proposed change orders, and submittals
  • Coordinate construction documents during the construction phase
  • Lead pre-construction, OAC, pre-installation, and closeout meetings
  • Review contractor pay applications
  • Perform substantial completion and final completion inspections
  • Create and issue deficiency lists
  • Review construction testing and inspection reports
  • Coordinate consultant responses when needed
  • Manage closeout documentation, warranties, manuals, training, and final payment review
  • Monitor post-construction warranty requests
  • Perform quality control reviews of drawings and specifications
  • Help mentor project coordinators and emerging professionals

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with owners, contractors, consultants, and internal project teams.

Qualifications include:

  • 3+ years of experience with an architecture firm or construction company on commercial projects
  • A professional degree in Architecture preferred
  • Registered Architect preferred
  • LEED AP preferred
  • Experience with K-12 or higher education projects preferred
  • Strong understanding of architecture practice and the construction process
  • Ability to interpret contract documents and contractual agreements
  • Strong communication, negotiation, follow-up, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Adobe products, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Microsoft Office
  • Detail-oriented and accurate with strong technical judgment
  • Proactive problem solver who responds well under pressure
  • Comfortable walking construction sites, climbing ladders when needed, and occasionally lifting up to 25 lbs.

Who This Is For

This opportunity is a strong fit for someone who enjoys construction-phase work and wants a role with real responsibility in the field.

The right person will be thorough, factual, proactive, and comfortable helping contractors, owners, consultants, and internal teams stay aligned throughout construction.
