What are construction project architects?

Construction project architects are licensed professionals who plan, design, and oversee the construction of buildings and structures. They work closely with clients, engineers, and contractors to ensure that projects meet functional, aesthetic, and safety requirements. Their responsibilities include creating detailed blueprints, selecting materials, managing project timelines, and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations. Throughout the construction process, they coordinate various aspects to bring a project from concept to completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Construction Project Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Construction Project Architect, you need a strong background in architectural design, construction methods, and building codes, usually supported by a professional architecture degree and licensure (e.g., AIA, NCARB certification). Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and project management tools like BIM is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage client relationships. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations, while meeting clients’ expectations.

What is the difference between Construction Project Architect vs Construction Manager?

AspectConstruction Project ArchitectConstruction Manager
CredentialsArchitect license, architecture degree, possibly LEED or other certificationsConstruction management degree or related certifications (e.g., CCM, PMP)
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, architectural offices, project sites during constructionConstruction sites, project offices, client meetings
Industry UsageDesign and planning phase, overseeing architectural complianceConstruction phase, managing schedules, budgets, and on-site activities

The Construction Project Architect primarily focuses on design, planning, and ensuring architectural standards are met during construction. In contrast, the Construction Manager oversees the entire construction process, managing schedules, budgets, and on-site operations. Both roles collaborate closely but have distinct responsibilities within the building project lifecycle.

How does a Construction Project Architect typically collaborate with contractors and engineers during a project's construction phase?

A Construction Project Architect plays a central role in coordinating with contractors and engineers throughout the construction phase to ensure that the project is built according to design specifications and regulatory standards. They attend regular site meetings, review shop drawings and submittals, and address any design-related questions or issues that arise on-site. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the architect must balance design intent, technical feasibility, and project timelines while facilitating collaboration among all stakeholders. This collaborative approach helps to minimize costly errors, maintain project quality, and ensure that construction progresses smoothly.

Job description

Do you thrive on the conceptual design process?

Do you know what it takes to turn ideas into built reality?

We're looking for a project architect + designer with 5-10 years of experience who brings a curiosity and passion for design. The project architect will work closely with the design team to quickly conceptualize and communicate design ideas utilizing a variety of mediums. The right candidate will bring an acute design sensibility that is balanced by an understanding of practical applicability. Our staff work on projects of varying types and scales, so the ability to work collaboratively with project teams - large and small - is an important attribute. The project architect must be proficient in Revit and have advanced knowledge of construction documentation and delivery methods.

If this sounds like a good fit, we want to meet you!
