How much do project accounting jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for project accounting in Indiana is $68,431.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $58,000.00 and $76,100.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How much does a project accountant earn?

A project accountant's average salary varies by experience and location but typically ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 annually. Senior project accountants or those with specialized skills and certifications can earn over $100,000 per year. Compensation often includes benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans, and the role requires proficiency in accounting software and project management tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Accountant, you need a solid background in accounting principles, financial reporting, and project management, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with project accounting software (such as Deltek or Oracle), ERP systems, and often a CPA certification are highly valued. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help ensure accurate tracking and reporting of project finances. These skills are crucial for maintaining budget compliance, supporting project success, and providing clear financial insights to stakeholders.

What does a project accountant do?

A project accountant manages financial aspects of specific projects, including budgeting, cost tracking, and financial reporting. They ensure projects stay within budget, analyze variances, and often use accounting software to monitor project financial health.

Can you make $500,000 a year as an accountant?

Project accountants and senior financial professionals with extensive experience, specialized skills, and certifications such as CPA or CMA can potentially earn $500,000 annually, especially in large corporations or consulting firms. However, such high salaries are uncommon and typically require advanced roles, leadership positions, or significant bonuses and incentives.

How does a project accountant typically collaborate with project managers and other departments to ensure accurate financial tracking?

Project accountants work closely with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to track budgets, forecast costs, and monitor expenditures throughout a project's lifecycle. They attend regular project meetings to stay updated on progress and any scope changes that could impact the budget. Additionally, project accountants often coordinate with accounts payable and receivable departments to ensure timely processing of invoices and payments, helping to maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for each project. This collaborative approach helps prevent cost overruns and ensures financial compliance with organizational policies.

What is project accounting?

Project accounting is a specialized form of accounting that tracks the financial progress of projects, rather than the overall company. It involves recording, analyzing, and reporting financial data specifically related to individual projects, such as budgets, costs, billing, and profitability. This enables organizations to monitor project performance, ensure financial control, and make informed decisions to keep projects on track and within budget.

Do you need a CPA to be a project accountant?

A project accountant does not typically need a CPA license, but having one can enhance credibility and career prospects. Most project accountants focus on financial management, budgeting, and reporting, often requiring a strong understanding of accounting principles and software. Certification such as CPA or CMA can be beneficial but is not usually mandatory for the role.

Role Overview
The Accounting and Tax Manager leads the service relationship for an assigned group of small business clients. It's a role with real responsibility: you are TMA's primary point of contact for your assigned clients, the lead on their tax and accounting work, and a manager who helps develop the Staff Accountants and Project Accountants who support that work. You'll work directly with business owners throughout the year - not just at tax time - helping them stay ahead of their obligations and run stronger businesses.
What You'll Do
Maintain and Enhance Client Relationships
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted resource for an assigned group of small business clients, building lasting relationships through responsiveness and a genuine desire to be of service.
  • Communicate proactively throughout the year, answering questions on accounting and tax matters as they arise.
  • Lead the onboarding of new clients, guiding them onto TMA's monthly system and setting the foundation for a strong, lasting relationship.

Lead Tax Services
  • Oversee the timely, accurate preparation and delivery of business and personal income tax returns for your assigned clients, performing preparation and quality-control review as appropriate.
  • Help clients plan ahead for taxes by advising them of their obligations before they are due, so they have every opportunity to prepare and are never caught off guard.

Oversee Accounting and Quality Control
  • Provide quality control over the financial statements and work product for your assigned clients, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Review work submitted to you by teammates and return it with timely, constructive feedback.
  • Manage the workflow of your assigned clients so deadlines are consistently met throughout the year, including the busier Q1 filing months.

Supervise and Support the Service Team
  • Help ensure your clients are served efficiently and well.
  • Supervise the Staff Accountants and Project Accountants assigned to your clients' work, monitoring production and supporting their growth.
  • Serve as a first resource for their questions, resolving issues and escalating to firm leadership when a matter calls for it.

Qualifications:
  • An active CPA or EA credential. Candidates actively pursuing the CPA license will also be considered.
  • Experience in public accounting, tax preparation, or small business accounting, with a strong working knowledge of business and individual income tax.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
  • A natural relationship-builder who communicates clearly and earns the trust of business owners.
  • Someone who enjoys helping others grow and holding work to a high standard of quality.
  • Organized and able to manage a full group of clients and multiple deadlines with confidence and independence.
  • Tech-savvy and able to learn new tools quickly. Experience with QuickBooks Online and professional tax software preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
  • $80,000-$120,000 yearly depending on experience and other qualifications
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • Medical, dental, and vision plans
  • 401(k) with matching
  • PTO - 120 hours per year, with additional PTO after 5 and 10 years of service
  • 15+ employee events per year, including Family Day at Victory Field

Culture and Growth
  • Stable, established firm with 95%+ client retention and consistent growth
  • Named one of the Best Places to Work in Indiana, 2025 and 2026
  • Collaborative team environment with experienced CPAs, EAs, and CPPs
  • Professional development included - TMA supports continuing professional education and the maintenance of your CPA or EA credential
  • Work that matters - we help small business owners build stronger businesses
