Employees in this field operate and maintain machinery that cuts, folds, laminates, or prints on materials to meet customer specifications. The job may also involve quality control, troubleshooting equipment issues, and ensuring production runs efficiently. Attention to detail and mechanical aptitude are important skills for this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a progressive converting?

To thrive as a Paper Converting Machine Operator, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, strong mechanical aptitude, and experience or training in operating industrial machinery. Job description

What a Day Looks Like

You start your morning walking the plant floor with engineering and maintenance, tape measure in hand, confirming dimensions for a process upgrade. After a quick safety huddle and a project estimation session, you head back to your workstation to transform those field notes into precise drawings. By midday, you're refining a P&ID and process flow diagram for a capital installation, then shifting to a structural layout with beam calculations and deck design. In the afternoon, you review vendor equipment drawings, generate flat patterns for maintenance, convert plots to PDFs, and archive your work so the team can retrieve it later with ease. It’s hands-on, detail-obsessed, and deeply collaborative.

Impact You’ll Make
  • Collaborate across plant engineering, maintenance, and department teams; communicate progress and align at safety and project meetings.
  • Develop drawings and documentation: layouts, P&ID’s, process flow diagrams, piping, structural, electrical, fabrication, and installation packages.
  • Produce print plots, copy prints, and convert drawing sets to PDF; take precise field measurements to validate designs.
  • Perform beam calculations and deck design; design with OSHA considerations for construction elements (ladders, railings, decks), piping, electrical, and ASME pressure vessels.
  • Evaluate vendor equipment drawings; build material lists, solicit quotes, create purchase requisitions, and track materials.
  • Archive prints and material lists; help the plant locate legacy documentation quickly.
  • Support GTP and SEA initiatives with graphic art; supply maintenance with flat patterns and detailed part drawings.
  • Tackle additional tasks as assigned and thrive with limited supervision.
What You Bring
  • 2-year CAD/Drafting degree (or equivalent experience) and 8–12 years of industry drafting/design experience.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and strong command of CAD tools; expert in blueprint reading.
  • Comfort working at a computer for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to capture measurements in a chemical plant environment.
  • Willingness to use PPE as needed (respirator, fall arrest harness, gloves, chemical suit, hearing protection).
  • Ability to perform confined space entry and work at heights when required.
Tools & Technologies
  • CAD Software (AutoCAD)
Benefits
  • Medical, dental, vision, 401(k)
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • 24/7 Fitness Center
