Description
The National WWII Museum is currently seeking an Assistant Director of Teacher Programs. Reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Assistant Director of Teacher Programs provides leadership for the Museum's teacher professional development initiatives and curriculum development. The Assistant Director advances a major institutional priority, with K-12 education being a center point of the Museum's 2025-2035 strategic plan. This role manages a team of educators who create and present standards-aligned curriculum in social studies and across disciplines. The Assistant Director develops and oversees plans to expand the Museum's professional development offerings for educators locally and nationally through onsite, offsite, and online programs. This position also presents professional learning sessions on content and pedagogy at the Museum, online, and at education events across the country. The Assistant Director helps set and achieve goals, manage workflows, and contribute to relevant budgets and fundraising proposals. Working closely with the Education Department and colleagues across the Museum, this role supports the planning and execution of initiatives designed to engage thousands of teachers annually.
Requirements
- Manage a team of educators who work with teachers and support the successful planning and execution of projects, programs, and initiatives.
- Develop and execute a strategy for classroom curriculum and content creation, as well as related educator professional development.
- Lead the team in curriculum design and the presentation of teacher professional development programs.
- Serve as the lead administrator for the Museum's onsite professional development initiatives, including but not limited to annual intensive summer professional learning programs, one-day workshops, and onsite teacher events.
- Work with the Director of Teaching and Learning and the Associate Vice President of Education to define and refine K-12 education strategic priorities, and to ensure the quality, accessibility, and distribution of the Museum's K-12 curriculum and content.
- Work with the team to expand and refine teacher initiatives through strong program design, documentation, and evaluation.
- Collaborate with the team to establish a planning calendar that supports program growth, funding, promotion, and staff coordination.
- Support staff development by delegating responsibilities effectively, evaluating performance, encouraging professional growth, and creating opportunities for leadership and collaboration within the department and across the Museum.
- Partner with the Institutional Advancement Department to develop funding proposals for teacher initiatives and classroom content.
- Assist the Education Department and the President's Office with planning and logistical support for meetings of the Board Education & Access Committee, Board Executive Committee, and Board of Trustees.
- Participate in assigned task forces, staff committees, projects, assignments, and related duties as directed by the Director of Teaching and Learning or the Associate Vice President of Education.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; master's degree strongly preferred in K-12 education, history, museum education, or a related field.
- Minimum of two years of experience managing a team.
- Minimum of five years' experience working with elementary and/or secondary school students and teachers in a museum, school, or other educational setting.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing classroom curricula and professional development experiences. Familiarity with state-level and national standards across disciplines is preferred. A deep understanding of the needs of students and teachers, and of the role museums can play in supporting them, is essential.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Willingness to work overtime during special events, heavy programmatic or visitation periods, or to meet deadlines.
In addition to offering competitive wages, the Museum's benefits package includes:
- Medical insurance - 2 plan options; Museum pays 75% of premium
- Dental and vision insurance
- Flexible spending account
- 401(k) - Museum matches 50% of employee contribution up to 6%; employer contribution full vested after 3 years of employment
- Life insurance and AD&D - $15,000 policy employer paid; additional life and AD&D available
- Long term disability insurance
- Paid vacation and sick leave, 10 paid holidays per year
- Free parking
- Tuition assistance and professional development
- Employee assistance program
