Job description

Design Engineer Intern
Composed of Chromalox, Durex Industries, Vulcanic, and Thermocoax businesses, Electrical Thermal Solutions (ETS), part of Spirax Group, creates electrical process heating and temperature management solutions, including industrial heaters and systems, heat tracing, and a range of component technologies.
At Chromalox, we build advanced thermal technologies for the world's most challenging industrial heating applications.
Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, we got our start with an innovative solution 100 years ago when a self-taught engineer invented the first metal-sheathed resistance heating element. It was this then-advanced thermal technology that launched an entire industry.
We excel in industries that have high expectations. We are acknowledged as experts at delivering solutions that exceed specifications, limit risk, and reduce operating costs.
Join us as we continue to provide solutions to our customers and the world!
The Role:
The Engineering Intern supports the Design Engineering team by assisting in designing and developing innovative solutions that meet client requirements and industry standards. This role contributes to engineering studies on design for products, associated and subsystem components, and structures while reviewing engineering proposals, process requirements, and related technical data of design. The intern will develop practical engineering skills through hands-on collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful implementation of design projects.
Your Responsibilities:
  • Assist in applying engineering principles to design, modify, or develop facilities, testing, machines, equipment, or processes.
  • Support the creation of Engineering Drawings, Bills of Material (BOM's), Calculations and Routings.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineers and cross-functional teams to analyze data to determine feasibility of product proposal.
  • Studies engineering and technical publications to keep abreast of technological changes and developments in industry.
  • Assist in preparations of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Support special and engineered-to-order (ETO) or purchase-to-order (PTO/PTOD) requests by gathering technical and vendor information as needed.
  • Utilize internal systems and tools to document design details, maintain accurate records, and support work that is 'on-time' and within budget.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, tools, and technical resources used by the Design Engineering team.

Requirements:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or related discipline preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering fundamentals to real-world problems, including basic calculations and analytical thinking.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to manage tasks independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in standard PC applications (e.g., Microsoft Office); exposure to engineering tools, CAD, or ERP/CRM systems is a plus.
