The pay range is $95,000.00 - $171,000.00

A role in Engineering within Store Design offers the opportunity to apply your technical expertise to complex building systems that directly impact the safety, reliability, sustainability, and long-term performance of Target's facilities. Working alongside cross-functional partners and industry experts, you'll help establish engineering standards, influence enterprise design strategies, and deliver solutions that support Target's continued growth.


As a Lead Refrigeration Engineer, you will serve as an enterprise technical expert responsible for the strategy, design, development, commissioning, and continuous evolution of refrigeration systems across Target's Retail Stores.

You will establish enterprise refrigeration design standards while providing technical leadership for refrigeration equipment, controls integration, refrigerant strategies, energy optimization, and lifecycle performance. Working with internal partners and external engineering consultants, you will ensure refrigeration systems support Target's operational, food safety, environmental, and sustainability objectives.

You will evaluate emerging refrigeration technologies, influence enterprise design strategies, mentor engineers, and continuously improve Target's refrigeration engineering practices.

About you:

  • Four-year degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline from an Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) accredited program

  • 7+ years of experience with a consultant engineering firm, refrigeration contractor, retailer, or manufacturer specializing in commercial refrigeration systems

  • Expert knowledge of commercial refrigeration system design, operation, commissioning, and lifecycle performance

  • Experience supporting refrigeration system installation and construction activities, including field coordination and issue resolution.

  • Experience developing refrigeration standards, specifications, and engineering design criteria

  • Knowledge of refrigeration controls, system optimization, refrigerant management, energy efficiency strategies, and regulatory requirements

  • Well-developed understanding of commercial building design, construction processes, and multidisciplinary engineering coordination

  • Ability to use CAD and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, including Autodesk Revit, in the development and review of construction documents.

  • Practical knowledge of refrigeration equipment selection, application, and system integration

  • Ability to negotiate effectively and build consensus among diverse stakeholders

  • Ability to synthesize complex technical and business information to make informed engineering decisions

  • Ability and desire to seek out emerging technologies and continuously expand technical expertise

  • Ability to champion innovative ideas with confidence and ensure difficult technical problems are addressed

  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and influence engineering decisions across multiple business functions while ensuring all viewpoints are considered

  • Ability to travel up to 25%

A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member's core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
