What does a typical day look like for our Project Engineers?

As a Project Engineer, you will be expected to work as part of a design/project management team on various airport and/or municipal infrastructure projects and related works. This role supports and oversees the design and delivery of airfield and groundside infrastructure projects. Key responsibilities include preparing engineering designs and documentation, conducting site visits and contractor inspections, assisting with project management and contract administration, and ensuring compliance with applicable standards. The position also contributes to proposal preparation, business development, research, and overall project team support from planning through construction.


Specific tasks include:

  • Preparing and overseeing the design of airfield infrastructure;
  • Preparation of proposals;
  • Business development as it relates to airfield infrastructure;
  • Assist in the planning, design and construction of airfield and municipal infrastructure projects through the application of theory and principles of civil engineering under the direction of project managers and professional engineers;
  • Assist in the development and preparation of figures, design drawings, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, technical reports, etc.
  • Undertake research activities to identify and develop potential solutions to design challenges associated with airfield facility design/construction;
  • Assist in the project management and contract administration duties for infrastructure project including but not limited to the preparation of budget/schedule updates, progress payment certificates, shop drawing review, site instructions, change orders, commissioning inspections, etc.
  • Inspect project sites and evaluate contractor work to determine compliance with Contract Documents and prepared daily records, summary report, update schedule, and other documentation as required;
  • Plan and conduct site visits and field surveys; and
  • Provide support to the Project Team as required.
  • Work with Professional Engineers and Project Managers in the design and project management of airfield infrastructure projects for private, regional and international airports by applying principles of civil engineering.
  • Specific tasks include design of new runways, taxiways, aprons, airside service roads, airside commercial developments including associated site servicing, grading, earthworks and stormwater management
  • Assist in the development and preparation of figures, design drawings, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, technical reports, etc.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current Transport Canada, ICAO, FAA and related standards and recommended practices.
  • Provide QA/QC for in-progress and completed designs
  • Enhance knowledge of requirements of reviewing agencies such as NAV CANADA, Transport Canada, Municipalities, etc.
  • Inspect project sites and evaluate contractor work to determine compliance with Contract Documents;
  • Plan and conduct site visits and topographic surveys.


What do we need from you?

Our best fit for this role would be a self-starter who has experience in civil engineering design or project engineering, and is known for seeing ahead of the curve, getting in front of problems before they arise.

Additional skills and experience we are seeking:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training with a minimum five (5) years’ related experience
  • Demonstrated experience in civil engineering, design or project engineering/management for the municipal/land development/transportation industry, with airport experience an asset
  • Strong communication and report writing skills and ability to prioritize/manage multiple project timelines.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and Civil3D as well as the MS Office suite of programs (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Topographic survey experience, geotechnical/pavement design knowledge and an interest in airports/aviation are considered assets
