Position Description
The Engineering Manager - Controls & Embedded Systems is responsible for leading the design, development, implementation, and support of control systems for commercial vehicles. This role is primarily focused on leading engineering efforts, guiding team performance, and serving as a key interface between Modine and OEM customers for compliance-related activities.
Key Responsibilities
Controls & Embedded Systems Engineering Leadership
  • Lead the design, development, and validation of control systems for commercial vehicle products.
  • Manage and mentor a team of engineers and technicians supporting controls and electrical development.
  • Oversee product development from concept through production using APQP methodologies.
  • Drive execution of engineering deliverables, ensuring adherence to cost, quality, and timing objectives.
  • Provide technical oversight for troubleshooting, testing, and system optimization (lab, plant, and field).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product engineering, manufacturing, and program management.
  • Ensure robust engineering specifications and documentation for control systems and electromechanical components.
  • Support prototype builds, validation activities, and product launches.
  • Guide selection, validation, and management of components (controllers, harnesses, fans, etc.).
  • Develop and maintain user interface software for Modine products.
  • Develop and maintain tools used by Modine engineers and technicians. This includes field services tools used by Application Engineering and Sales along with tools used by plant and Warranty technicians.
  • Works with all areas of engineering and production to provide the best manufacturing methods, and keeps Manufacturing Engineering Manager abreast of the status of established projects.
  • Designs equipment when necessary, specifies equipment to satisfy manufacturing requirements. Will troubleshoot machine control programs, and develop or modify PLC programs where needed.
  • Manage suppliers of electromechanical components (controllers, wire harnesses, fans, etc.). This includes validating new parts supplied to Modine.
  • Develop and maintain internal design and engineering specifications for electromechanical components.

Software Compliance & Cybersecurity Leadership
  • Lead processes aligned with Automotive SPICE (ASPICE), cybersecurity, and software quality standards.
  • Translate OEM requirements into actionable engineering and quality processes.
  • Develop a roadmap for compliance maturity, including documentation, traceability, and audit readiness.
  • Support and progressively lead customer-facing audits, assessments, and technical reviews.
  • Drive adoption of secure development lifecycle concepts within controls and embedded systems.
  • Coordinate cross-functional alignment across engineering, quality, IT, and suppliers.
  • Identify gaps in current processes and lead continuous improvement initiatives to meet evolving regulatory expectations.

Standards, Safety, and Operational Excellence
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations, including:
    • ISO 26262 (Functional Safety)
    • ISO/SAE 21434 (Cybersecurity)
    • UNECE R155 / R156
    • Electrical codes (NEC, UL, IEC, CE)
  • Maintain and enforce internal safety and engineering standards.
  • Oversee risk identification, mitigation, and escalation across programs.
  • Support customer and supplier interactions related to engineering and compliance topics.

Required Education & Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 7-10+ years of experience in controls engineering, automotive systems, software or related technical disciplines.
  • Prior experience in a technical leadership or people management role.
  • Prior exposure to OEM customers or regulated product environments
  • Strong background in controls system design and implementation.
  • Excellent problem-solving, root cause analysis, and decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without authority.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated program or project management capability.
  • Experience in vehicular thermal management, HVAC, or off-highway/automotive systems.
  • Exposure to or working knowledge of:
    • Automotive SPICE (ASPICE)
    • Automotive cybersecurity standards and practices
  • Programming experience in embedded systems (C, Java, XML, Python).
  • PLC Programming experience
  • Familiarity with CAN, J1939, and UDS protocols.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes, such as NEC, UL, IEC and CE.
